Position Overview
The Senior Safety Manager serves as a
subject matter expert and strategic leader
responsible for safety performance, program development, and cultural advancement across multiple projects and business units. This role provides senior-level oversight of the safety department, mentors safety leadership staff, and partners closely with Operations and Executive Leadership to integrate safety into all phases of construction delivery. The Senior Safety Manager plays a critical role in developing corporate safety strategy, improving systems and processes, and driving continuous improvement across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Department Management
- Lead, mentor, and manage Safety Managers, Safety Superintendents, and other safety staff
- Balance workloads and staffing levels based on project volume, complexity, and risk
- Conduct performance evaluations, career development planning, and succession planning
- Assess training needs and provide coaching, mentoring, and advanced technical guidance
- Support recruiting, retention, and development of safety personnel
- Manage specialty vendors, consultants, and third-party safety resources
Corporate & Business Unit Safety Oversight
- Determine and fulfill safety needs across multiple projects and business units
- Evaluate and improve the effectiveness of safety inspection and incident management systems
- Establish inspection criteria, expectations, and performance standards
- Analyze inspection, incident, and near-miss data to identify trends and improvement strategies
- Distribute open-item summaries and safety performance evaluations to leadership
- Evaluate and enforce compliance with federal, state, local, corporate, and client requirements
- Assess subcontractor safety performance and drive accountability and corrective actions
Strategic Planning & Continuous Improvement
- Partner with Operations Leadership to align safety needs with department and company goals
- Identify safety risks associated with future work and emerging project scopes
- Research and evaluate current and upcoming OSHA regulations and industry best practices
- Lead development and continuous improvement of corporate safety policies and procedures
- Serve as a technical authority for complex hazard analyses and high-risk activities
- Drive company-wide safety initiatives, campaigns, and stand-downs
Incident Response, Training & Field Support
- Lead OSHA or third-party safety inspections (on site or remote)
- Lead crisis response, serious incident investigations, and root-cause analysis
- Develop, review, and approve common and complex task analyses at all levels
- Lead safety planning during preconstruction and subcontractor preconstruction meetings
- Develop and deliver safety orientations, toolbox talks, and large-group safety presentations
- Coach others on effective safety communication, inspection practices, and enforcement
- Identify, select, and deploy specialized safety and protective equipment
Corporate Integration & External Engagement
- Act as primary point of contact for safety systems (e.g., inspection platforms, toolbox processes)
- Support project pursuits, client interviews, and subcontractor prequalification efforts
- Review contracts for safety risks and compliance considerations
- Collaborate with Risk Management and other corporate functions
- Maintain positive relationships with regulators, clients, subcontractors, and peer safety professionals
- Participate in professional safety and construction organizations
- Recognize and promote outstanding safety performance across the company
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (preferred)
- CHST, CSP, or equivalent professional safety certification required
- OSHA 30 Construction required;
OSHA 500 preferred - First Aid / CPR certification
- Minimum of 8 years of construction safety experience with a degree

12+ years without - Demonstrated expertise in high-hazard construction activities (cranes, fall protection, scaffolding, excavation, electrical)
- Strong technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills
- Effective public speaker capable of delivering large-group safety communications
- Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple business units and geographic areas
- Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and lead during emergency or crisis situations
- Physically capable of navigating active construction sites and varied environmental conditions
