Job Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Inpatient Coding Specialist to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for accurately coding inpatient medical records to ensure proper billing and reimbursement. This role requires a strong understanding of medical coding standards, including DRG, CPT, ICD-9, ICD-10, and ICD coding systems. The Inpatient Coding Specialist will play a vital role in maintaining the integrity of medical records and supporting the overall revenue cycle process within a fast-paced healthcare environment. Prior experience with EMR and EHR systems, along with comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology and medical billing practices, is essential for success in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Review inpatient medical records to assign accurate diagnostic and procedural codes using ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT, and DRG systems.
  • Ensure all coding complies with current regulatory guidelines and hospital policies.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to clarify documentation discrepancies when necessary.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of coding activities within electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Support medical billing processes by providing precise coded data for claims submission.
  • Assist in audits and quality assurance reviews related to coding accuracy and compliance.
  • Stay updated on changes in coding regulations, payer requirements, and healthcare policies affecting inpatient coding practices.

Skills

  • Proficiency in DRG, CPT coding, ICD-9, ICD-10, and ICD coding standards.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and medical records management.
  • Experience with EMR and EHR systems is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical billing and medical collection processes.
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills to ensure accurate code assignment.
  • Ability to interpret complex clinical documentation accurately.
  • Good communication skills for collaborating with healthcare providers and billing teams.
  • Prior experience in a medical office or hospital setting is advantageous. This position offers an opportunity to contribute significantly to the accuracy of clinical documentation and revenue cycle management within a professional healthcare environment.
