OSP Design Engineer OR OSP Senior Design Engineer

**Information Technology Services intends to hire either a Comm Infra Engineer (PIB2) or a Senior Comm Infra Engineer (PIB3) based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. **

Physical Infrastructure, part of IT Services at the University of Iowa, is seeking either an OSP Design Engineer or an OSP Senior Design Engineer to support the design, operations, and installation effort on OSP (Outside Plant Fiber) projects across campus.

OSP Design Engineer:

The primary responsibility of this position is to assist with the design efforts on pathways and cable plant, coordinating with design staff to present estimates. This position will ensure outside plant pathways and cabling are properly installed in duct banks, concrete encased pathways, and HDPE piping. This position will serve as a liaison regarding agreements for the use of dark fiber with departments, vendors, and cellular companies.

This role may also provide functional supervision for professional and student staff, providing direction and feedback. This position will work with various trades to fulfill installation requirements.

In addition to installation services, this position may also assist with setup, operation, troubleshooting, repair, and documentation of outside cabling plant.

This position will serve as a liaison regarding agreements for the use of dark fiber with departments, vendors, and cellular companies.

This role will also provide functional and/or administrative supervision for professional and student staff, providing direction, feedback, guidance and coaching. This position will work with various trades to fulfill installation requirements.

In addition to installation services, this position may also assist with setup, operation, troubleshooting, repair, and documentation of outside cabling plant.

For Both Levels:

The person in this position will frequently move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and ascend/descend ladders to install, service, and inspect equipment.

A valid US driver's license and ability to meet the University of Iowa's fleet safety requirements is required.

OSP Design Engineer:

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
• Experience (typically 1 year or more) supporting Cabling plant, including planning, development, implementation, and maintenance.
• Proficient in construction techniques.
• Ability to routinely move and transport computer and audiovisual equipment up to 50 pounds. Ability to position self to securely install, mount, and/or hang a wide range of audiovisual equipment and ascend/descend ladders.
• Working knowledge of standard practices for low-voltage system installation and cable labeling.
• Working knowledge of the latest trends in outside cable plant
• Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to markup project documents, write and deliver clear instructions, and create work summaries.
• Demonstrated ability to work both individually and as part of a coordinated project team.
• Working familiarity with CSI Division 27 standards for construction specifications.
• Valid US driver's license with the ability to meet the University of Iowa's Fleet Safety Requirements:

Desirable Qualifications:

• Low-voltage related certifications such as BICSI technician or Project Management.
• Some project management experience, including preparing bid proposals and project budgets.
• Experience supporting technology in an enterprise level configuration (500+ users).
• Experience installing, terminating, splicing, testing, fiber optic cabling.
• Experience supporting technology in a higher education environment.

OSP Senior Design Engineer

Required Qualifications:

• Experience (typically 3 years or more) supporting Cabling plant, including planning, development, implementation, and maintenance.
• Some project management experience, including preparing bid proposals and project budgets, or closely related.
• Proficient in construction techniques.
