Description Of Work
This Environmental Health Regional Specialist position protects public health by ensuring environmental hazards are controlled in state institutions, public swimming pools, and tattoo establishments. It provides technical guidance and training to local health department staff enforcing state rules in these areas, and acts as a health advisor to state institutions on matters of location, construction, and sanitation.
Key Duties Include
- Conduct annual inspections of state institutions to assess environmental health conditions and prepare detailed reports with recommended corrective actions
- Provide technical consultation to local health departments on complex issues involving public swimming pools, tattoo establishments, and institutional sanitation
- Evaluate and approve delegation of authority for local environmental health specialists through fieldwork review, examinations, and performance assessments
- Develop and deliver training programs for environmental health professionals, industry representatives, and state agencies on relevant public health topics
- Assist in the investigation of disease outbreaks at state institutions and coordinate response efforts to identify causes and implement preventive measures
- Support local health departments with plan reviews, enforcement actions, and emergency response activities related to environmental health threats
- Participate in policy development by identifying regulatory issues, drafting rule revisions, and soliciting stakeholder input to improve program effectiveness
- Promote consistency and quality across local and state environmental health programs through consultation, evaluation, and technical support
- Represent the Department in public forums, including presentations to boards of health and county commissioners, to advocate for environmental health initiatives
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of environmental health laws, rules, and best practices to ensure compliance and inform decision-making

**Salary Grade Range: $53,164 - $93,038
Recruitment Range: $53,164 - $69,364

- Demonstrated experience with rules and regulations governing public swimming pools, tattoo establishments, and retail food operations
- Management prefers registration with the NC State Board of Environmental Health Specialist Examiners
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel for inspections, meetings, and trainings
- Demonstrated experience providing training in both classroom and field settings
- Experience conducting public swimming pool plan reviews and providing technical feedback for compliance
