The Molecular Biologist coordinates and performs a full range of molecular biological examinations and analyses on specimens, including human body fluids, tissues (human and animal), clinical isolates, and environmental samples. This role interprets and reports results to physicians, clinics, hospitals, or public health agencies. The incumbent develops, validates, and implements new molecular tests; prepares validation documents and SOPs; and troubleshoots existing assays. Special emphasis is placed on genomic sequencing, including maintenance of sequencing instrumentation and troubleshooting of sequencing assays.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Extract nucleic acids from specimens, isolates, and samples using manual and automated methods.
  • Perform molecular techniques, including but not limited to PCR, MALDI-TOF, and NGS.
  • Evaluate, develop, validate, and implement new testing methods; prepare validation documents and SOPs.
  • Provide technical oversight of daily high-complexity testing, adhering to laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, result reporting, and record maintenance.
  • Maintain records of submitted samples, specimens, and referrals.
  • Evaluate, interpret, validate, and report laboratory results.
  • Conduct quality control checks on methods, materials, and equipment; document all QC activities, instrument calibrations, and maintenance.
  • Participate in evaluation of new products for clinical/reference laboratory use.
  • Fulfill testing personnel responsibilities per 42 CFR , including:
  • Performing only authorized high-complexity tests commensurate with education, training, and experience.
  • Following laboratory procedures for specimen handling, test analyses, reporting, and record-keeping.
  • Testing proficiency samples as patient specimens.
  • Adhering to QC policies and documenting activities, calibrations, and maintenance.
  • Identifying and correcting problems adversely affecting test performance or notifying supervisors.
  • Documenting corrective actions for deviant test systems.
  • Performing high-complexity testing under onsite supervision of a qualified general supervisor (except as specified in regulations).
  • Perform related duties as required.

Job Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge of molecular biology principles, theories, and practices, including related subspecialties.
  • Hands-on experience with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms, technologies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of current scientific methods, testing procedures, and their application to public health laboratory problems.
  • Ability to operate standard technical equipment, complex scientific apparatus, and automated analysis techniques.
  • Thorough understanding of laboratory safety practices and principles.
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations (e.g., CLIA).
  • Certification as a technologist under CLIA personnel requirements.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to maintain productive working relationships.
  • Successful participation in proficiency testing programs and recognition of QA issues.
  • Ability to compile, analyze, evaluate, and prepare laboratory reports.
