Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Building Official / City Inspector to lead our building inspection and code enforcement efforts. This pivotal role ensures compliance with building codes, protects public safety, and supports responsible growth in our residential and commercial projects. Reporting to city leadership, you will oversee plan reviews, inspections, permitting processes, and code enforcement activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough plan reviews for residential, commercial, and remodel projects to ensure compliance with International Building Codes (IBC), local ordinances, and zoning regulations.
  • Perform field inspections at various stages of construction, including foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and final occupancy.
  • Issue permits, certificates of occupancy, and correction notices as needed.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by guiding builders, contractors, homeowners, and developers through the permitting and inspection process.
  • Investigate code violations, enforce ordinances, and work collaboratively to resolve issues.
  • Stay current on code updates, attend training, and advise city staff and officials on building-related matters.
  • Collaborate with other departments (e.g., planning, public works) on development projects and community initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation using digital permitting systems.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in construction management, architecture, engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Certifications: Current certification as a Building Official (or eligibility to obtain); ICC certifications in building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical inspections highly desired.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5+ years in building inspection, code enforcement, or related construction fields; municipal government experience a plus.
  • Knowledge: In-depth understanding of IBC/IRC, energy codes, accessibility standards, and local amendments.
  • Skills: Strong communication skills (both verbal and written), attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and proficiency with permitting software (e.g., MyGov or similar).
  • Valid Texas driver's license and ability to pass a background check.
  • Ability to work independently while fostering positive relationships with stakeholders.
