Job Summary
As a Staff Software Engineer at Planned Parenthood Direct, you are a technical leader who drives impact through both direct contribution and organizational influence. You operate as a force multiplier across our patient-facing and clinician-facing product pods, shaping technical direction, architectural decisions, and engineering culture. This role requires a proven track record of creating improvements in stability, performance, and scalability across business-critical systems while multiplying the effectiveness of others through mentorship and cross-team facilitation. You will help set the 6-12 month technical direction, write business cases for technical investments, and participate in leadership decision-making while maintaining a strong individual contributor presence.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical authority across patient and clinician product surfaces, owning and driving architectural decisions that span multiple teams and systems.
- Anticipate technical issues at the product level and make proactive architectural and design decisions to prevent them, ensuring system resilience and scalability.
- Own and maintain expertise on large sections of the codebase backend, React web front-end, React Native mobile), and create improvements in stability, performance, and scalability.
- Design, implement, and maintain processes and reviews to ensure high-quality architectural and design decisions are made consistently across both pods.
- Manage stakeholders across product, clinical, and engineering teams to participate effectively in the design process, building consensus on complex technical approaches.
- Help set the 6-12 month strategic technical direction, identify areas of greatest technical need, and deliver on estimates for whole-team initiatives.
- Consistently reduce complexity of projects and processes; spot fundamental issues before they become major problems and proactively mitigate project risks.
- Multiply engineer effectiveness through mentorship, facilitation of cross-team work, and technical guidance; facilitate technical debates to help teams reach consensus.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- 8+ years of professional experience in software engineering, and 3+ years leading software development teams
- Deep expertise in our technical stack: (backend), React (web front-end), React Native (iOS and Android mobile), with comprehensive understanding of modern full-stack architecture.
- Proven track record of architecting, implementing, and shipping large-scale, business-critical systems that deliver measurable customer and business value.
- Experience setting technical direction and strategy for teams, with ability to look 6-12 months ahead and prioritize highest-impact work.
- Strong stakeholder management skills with ability to work effectively with product managers, clinical stakeholders, and executive leadership.
- Extensive experience with design reviews, architectural decision-making, and establishing engineering processes that scale across multiple teams.
- Deep understanding of the tradeoffs between technical debt, feature velocity, and system quality, with proven judgment in making these decisions.
