About the Position

The Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a full-time, career-track Assistant Teaching Professor position in Technology, Society, and Policy, beginning on August 1, 2026. This is a teaching-track position with primary responsibilities in teaching and curricular innovation, with opportunities for engagement in applied projects and policy initiatives.

We seek a scholar-practitioner whose teaching and professional expertise engages the intersections of technology, society, and public policy. The successful candidate will design and teach courses that prepare students to analyze the societal impacts of emerging technologies, navigate complex ethical challenges, and engage with policy frameworks that shape innovation and social outcomes.

Heinz College is home to distinctive research centers and initiatives that explore the intersection of technology and society, including the Block Center for Technology and Society. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with these initiatives, contribute to co-curricular programming, and engage with faculty and students across the College.

Potential Areas of teaching expertise may include (but are not limited to):

  • Technology policy

  • Global governance addressing emerging technologies, including: blockchain, AI, etc.

  • Artificial intelligence governance and risk

  • Data governance, privacy, and surveillance both in private and public sectors

  • Internet and platform governance

  • Technology, democracy, and civic engagement

  • The social impacts of digital transformation across sectors

Responsibilities
  • Faculty on the teaching track at Heinz College are expected to teach an effective teaching load of 72 units, the equivalent of six full-semester length classes or twelve half-semester length classes (minis) per academic year.

  • Teach graduate-level courses across Heinz College degree programs in information systems, public policy, and management.

  • Collaborate with academic programs to design new courses and curricular pathways that address the intersections of technology, society, and public policy.

  • Participate in the intellectual life of Heinz College, including engagement with centers and initiatives related to technology and society.

  • Participate in service to the College and University, including curriculum development and faculty committees.

Qualifications
  • A terminal degree (PhD, JD, or equivalent) in a relevant field, or significant professional experience at the intersection of technology, policy, and society.

  • Demonstrated excellence, or potential for excellence, in teaching at the graduate or undergraduate level.

  • Ability to work across disciplines and connect technical, social, and policy perspectives.

  • Commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment.
