The mission of CalEPA is to restore, protect and enhance the environment and to ensure public health, environmental quality, and economic vitality. This position presents an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative, inter-disciplinary team dedicated to protecting public health and the environment.
Under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), the Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) performs a variety of tasks related to the statewide development, implementation, oversight, and evaluation of the CalARP program and the HMBP program, including the Area Plan program.
The Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) is a lead staff that conducts inspection and enforcement related duties, provides training and technical support, conducts rulemaking activities, and performs evaluations of Certified Unified Program Agencies (CUPAs) and/or participating agencies (PAs) for the implementation of the HMBP and CalARP programs. Additionally, the Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) job duties include, but are not limited to, technical research, responding to statutory and regulatory inquiries, aiding in the development of policies and procedures, and providing general support for statewide program development, oversight, and implementation.
This position requires travel up to 25% of the time.

Working Conditions
This position may be headquartered in Sacramento, CA, or at any CalEPA Board, Department, or Office (BDO) location statewide based on the incumbent's place of residence. The incumbent will be required to report to their assigned headquarters in accordance with the Statewide Telework Policy.
The positions at the CalEPA may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position's designated headquarters location at their own expense, as indicated on their duty statement.
Effective July 1, 2025, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP PLP 2025 directs that each employee shall receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours PLP 2025 leave credits, monthly. The salary range(s) included in the job advertisement do not reflect the 3 percent reduction in pay.
