Position Overview:

The Director of Safety is a senior management position directly responsible for managing the safety and risk associated with construction projects and company operations. The Director of Safety will proactively plan, manage, direct and implement the Company's safety initiatives to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident free work environment. The Safety Director supports and provides guidance for the safety department to ensure each construction project is conducting operations in a safe manner for the protection of our employees, clients, subcontractors, and the general public. Other responsibilities include overseeing risk assessments, incident investigations, training, and employee development to foster a strong safety culture. The role is a combination of understanding legal safety requirements, and setting standards for the company's workforce and ensuring compliance with applicable laws (OSHA), state and federal safety standards. The Director of Safety is a strategic and innovative thinker who sets the tone for corporate safety and risk management, demonstrates strong, proven leadership skills, works well in a team environment, and has excellent communication skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Responsible for managing the safety department employees and ensuring each construction project is conducting operations in a safe manner for the protection of our employees, clients, subcontractors, and the general public. that staff maintain the OSHA safety log and other administrative requirements related to safety operations, training and regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads development of and clearly articulates Company's safety vision, objectives, strategies, policies, and procedures to build a safety culture dedicated to safe behaviors.
  • Creates, updates, and enforces corporate safety manuals, polices, and procedures.
  • Manages hazard assessment activities by analyzing accidents, incident reports, metrics, and injury case studies to identify opportunities to develop preventive and corrective practices; Makes recommendations to resolve deficiencies.
  • Ensures all operations, work, and safety programs are consistent with and compliant with federal, state, and local safety regulations, including OSHA; Prepares study and analysis of accident causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies.
  • Plans and implements programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, at all levels to ensure employees have the knowledge to safely perform all job tasks.
  • Leads investigation into workplace accidents, injuries and unsafe working conditions to include interacting with workers compensation claims and communication with injured workers and the return to work strategies.
  • Oversees and participates in safety inspections and audits of field and site operations to ensure compliance and safety.
  • Promotes and builds a robust safety culture throughout the organization through leadership, training, and employee engagement.
  • Track and analyze safety performance data to identify trends, evaluate the effectiveness of existing programs, and pinpoint opportunities for improvement.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive annual safety reports, incident reports, and audit findings to senior management to inform decision-making and secure resources for safety improvements.
  • Develops annual plans and budgets for safety and health initiatives, allocating resources effectively.
  • Provides support to the safety committee.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications for Director of Safety:

  • Extensive knowledge of safety regulations (including OSHA standards), hazard identification and corrections, environmental regulations, workers compensation, and human behavior.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Forward Thinker – ability to plan ahead.
  • Willingness to lead, take charge, and offer opinions and direction; willingness to take on responsibilities and challenges.
  • Ability to deal calmly and effectively in high-stress situations.
  • Excellent problem solving and organizational skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in risk assessment, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Strong computer literacy skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Exceptional multitasking and organizational skills.
  • Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing with employees at all levels.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge and abilities listed qualifies.

  • Bachelor's degree in Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Safety Engineering, or a related field required.
  • Ten (10) years of progressive management experience in health and safety in the construction field is required.
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in senior management, managing and leading a structured safety program; general contractor or specialty contractor preferred.
  • In depth technical knowledge of construction related OSHA, federal, state, and local regulatory standards.

Certifications:

  • OSHA 30 hour Construction certification required; OSHA 500 course certification preferred.
  • CSP certification preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically able to work seated in front of a computer for long hours at a time.
  • Ability to travel to and from various jobsite locations as required to conduct safety inspections, audits and investigations.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.

Work Hours: The normal work hours for this position are Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 5:30pm.

Employees are expected to follow all OSHA and company policies to minimize accidents and injuries to personnel and property.

This position will be based at our corporate headquarters in Kings Mountain, NC, and most travel will be regional consisting of job sites within a 70 mile radius of the greater Charlotte metro area. This position will require travel overnight several times per year to our Florida regional office and also daily or overnight travel to various job sites from Florida to Virginia.
