As a Software Engineer III, you will take on a broader technical leadership role, shaping the architecture and scalability of our digital advertising platforms. You'll drive innovation in real-time bidding, large-scale data processing, and intelligent campaign optimization, ensuring that our systems remain highly performant, reliable, and impactful. What You'll Do
- Lead the design, development, and evolution of scalable, distributed systems in a high-traffic, low-latency environment.
- Drive architectural decisions and long-term technical strategies for complex systems and services.
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners—including product managers, data scientists, and operations teams—to align engineering initiatives with business outcomes.
- Write and maintain high-quality, performant code and establish best practices for the engineering team.
- Build and optimize large-scale data platforms for real-time audience targeting, personalization, and analytics.
- Anticipate, diagnose, and resolve production challenges, ensuring system reliability, scalability, and security.
- Act as a technical mentor and leader, guiding junior and mid-level engineers through design, implementation, and career growth.
- Champion engineering excellence by introducing new tools, frameworks, and processes that improve development velocity and product quality.
What You'll Need
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
- 5–7 years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record of building and scaling complex systems.
- Deep proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, Go, TypeScript).
- Hands-on experience with cloud-native architectures and services (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerized deployments (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, streaming pipelines, and event-driven architectures.
- Expertise in databases (SQL and NoSQL), data modeling, and performance optimization.
- Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and microservices at scale.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to break down ambiguous challenges into actionable solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction and drive alignment across teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with programmatic advertising systems (DSPs, SSPs, DMPs) and real-time bidding (RTB) protocols.
- Familiarity with the AWS ecosystem (e.g., EC2, S3, Lambda, DynamoDB, EMR, Athena, etc.).
- Knowledge of data privacy and compliance frameworks (GDPR, CCPA) and their impact on ad tech.
- Exposure to machine learning or predictive modeling in advertising or personalization.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence at both the technical and business levels.
The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate's relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant.

Exempt salary team members have unlimited PTO, subject to manager approval. Team members will receive six paid holidays per year. Team members may be eligible for paid sick and family leave in compliance with applicable state and local regulations.
Base Salary Range $143,000—$229,000 USDChewy is an equal opportunity employer.
