Hours of Operation: 3p - 11p
 
Job Summary: The Nursing Assistant's primary function is to provide basic patient care under the direction of nursing staff.  This position will perform duties such as feed, bathe, dress, groom, change linens, and move residents as directed or needed.  As a CMA, this position will administer medications as directed.
 
Essential Functions / Duties: 

• Provide direct resident care as assigned, conduct resident rounds daily, and perform nursing care as noted below:
o Answer call lights within designated timeframe.
o Give care to all residents assigned; make rounds on all residents; check soiled linens and side rails.
o Change incontinent residents; wash and dry soiled residents.
o Walk ambulatory residents; this includes taking them to the bathroom.
o Give tub baths, showers, or bed baths to residents.
o Complete oral hygiene and toileting.
o Turn and reposition all bed and chair residents.
o Place bedpans, linens, washbasins, and soiled linens in proper area.
o Complete charting on residents.

• Complete food percentage, intake and output, bowel, and bladder records.

• Empty and record all urinary drainage units.

• Review care plans, update and document nurse aide flow sheets with relevant information; document in nursing assistant notes and nurse aide flow sheets the care and treatment provided to the resident and the resident's response or lack of response to care provided.

• Initiate corrective action as necessary and/or seek assistance from the Charge Nurse; identify special resident problems and report them immediately to the Charge Nurse.

• Participate in resident care conferences and other facility meetings as assigned; participate in the development of an individualized plan of resident care for residents as assigned.

• Responsible for the safety of residents under his/her supervision.

• Participate in facility continuing education programs as required.

• Follow facility procedures for admission, discharge, and transfer of residents.

• Listen to resident, family, or physician concerns and initiate corrective action and/or report concerns to ADON.

• Must be able to work any shift as directed by the ADON.

• Comply with federal, state, and company policies, procedures, and regulations.

• Operate computers programmed with software needed to record, store, and analyze resident information; operate copy/fax/printer machines to send documents and produce documents.

• Perform other related duties as directed by the Administrator.
 
Shift Specific Duties:

• Day
o Take residents to the dining room and assist in feeding if assigned.
o Serve breakfast and/or lunch trays and assist residents that are unable to feed themselves; remove trays from resident rooms and return them to the dishwashing area; ensure that residents are offered nourishment.
o Roll beds down.

• Evening
o Take residents to the dining room and assist in feeding if assigned.
o Serve evening meal trays and assist residents that are unable to feed themselves; remove trays from resident rooms and return them to the dishwashing area; ensure that residents are offered nourishment.
o Prepare residents for bed.

Education and Experiences: Prior experience in a similar working environment is preferred, but not a requirement of the position. This position requires a certificate as a Nurse Aide and/or Medical Assistant in the State of Kansas and to be listed as a Nurse Aide and/or Medical Assistant in the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Registry.

• Ability to understand, observe, and enforce infection control procedures related to facility services.

• Ability to observe all facility safety policies and procedures; take accountability for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations within the unit assigned and within his/her span of control.

• Ability to understand and recognize potential physical, chemical, and electrical hazards and take immediate corrective action as appropriate.

• Ability to understand and enforce the Exposure Control Plan as this position risks occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens and other infectious material as an essential function of the job.

• Ability to safeguard the privacy of Residents' health information.

• Ability to speak and read English, and follow oral and written directions.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, residents, and staff.

• Ability to use computers; the ability to use the designated facility computer system (or systems) at a proficient level.

• Ability to perform other related duties as directed by administration.

• Must attend staff meetings, in-service classes, and committee meetings as assigned or required.
 
Physical and Other Requirements:  Primarily this position works in residents' rooms as well as other rooms and is subject to lifting, transporting, and supporting residents.  In addition, this position interacts with residents, family members, staff, etc., under all conditions and circumstances and must be constantly alert for resident safety. This position is also subject to exposure to infectious diseases, conditions, etc., including the Hepatitis B viruses. 
 
This position operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.  
 
This position requires the following abilities as essential for the position: 

• Ability to sit, stand, bend, stoop, stretch, crawl, crouch, kneel, balance, finger, grasp, push, pull, reach, or walk.

• Ability to lift people/objects from a lower to higher position or moving people/objects along a horizontal level but from position to position. This includes lifting and carrying weights in the 35 to 50 pound range.

• Ability to exert force upon an object in order to draw, drag or tug objects toward the source of the force in a sustained motion.
