Location: New Bedford Art Museum
608 Pleasant Street, New Bedford, MA 02740
Position Overview
The New Bedford Art Museum is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Lead Art Educator to facilitate Winter Wonders at the Art Museum, a weeklong, full-day creative art program for students in grades 1–5.
This seasonal program invites children to explore creativity through various mediums while drawing inspiration from the winter season and the Museum's exhibitions. The Lead Educator will design and deliver engaging, age-appropriate art activities based on daily prompts and guide participants in developing their artistic voice within a supportive, imaginative environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and teach a series of creative, hands-on art lessons aligned with daily prompts and the Museum's educational mission in advance of the program start date.
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and inspiring classroom environment for all students.
- Supervise and collaborate with the Assistant Educator to ensure smooth daily operations.
- Prepare materials and classroom setup prior to each session and oversee cleanup at the end of the day.
- Integrate exhibition or gallery connections into the program when appropriate.
- Encourage student reflection and discussion about their artwork.
- Communicate clearly with education staff regarding attendance, supplies, and daily updates.
- Maintain a safe and supportive environment for all participants.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience teaching or facilitating art programs for children in a school, museum, or community setting.
- Strong classroom management and communication skills.
- Proficiency with a variety of art materials and studio techniques.
- Ability to adapt lessons to multiple ages, learning styles, and available materials.
- Genuine enthusiasm for creative learning, collaboration, and community engagement.
Pre-Program Preparation (1-2 weeks before the program begins):
- Develop Lesson Plans: Design a series of creative, hands-on art lessons that align with the daily prompts and the Museum's educational mission. Lessons should encourage exploration, skill-building, and personal expression while remaining flexible for multiple age groups.
- Organize Materials: Create a detailed materials list for all planned activities and submit it to the Art Education Manager for review and ordering. Ensure all materials are appropriate, cost-effective, and readily available before the program begins.
- Collaborate with Staff: Meet with the Art Education Manager and supporting staff to review proposed lesson plans, confirm supply lists, and coordinate classroom setup to ensure smooth operations and clear expectations.
- Prepare in Advance: Work with the Museum team to set up the classroom and organize supplies at least one week prior to the program start date.
