San Francisco, California, United States Block Full time

Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose of economic empowerment. The blocks that form our foundational teams — People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more — provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.

The Role
The Business Product Compliance and Partnerships team serves as strategic compliance advisors to Block business teams, partnering with them to define product launch requirements, identify corresponding controls, and provide ongoing compliance support throughout the product lifecycle. This involves support efforts such as ongoing risk assessments, audits/exams, documenting Policies, Standards, Procedures, and Regulatory Change Management. Product Compliance Managers (PCMs) are key decision makers on compliance controls and recommendations to Product teams. Additionally, PCMs work closely with partner banks to help build and maintain world-class compliance programs for affiliated products.

We are looking for an experienced Compliance professional to support Block's efforts to make Bitcoin everyday money. You will lead a team of PCMs, and have a deep passion for cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. You will have years of experience building out and developing Compliance programs for Bitcoin solutions, with a deep understanding of anti-money laundering/counter-terrorist financing (AML/CTF), fraud/scams and global sanctions risks. This includes both developing in-house solutions to managing these risks, as well as partnering with industry leading data and technology vendors to support our ability to detect and disrupt illicit activity. To be successful in this role, you are willing to roll up their sleeves with thoughtful, creative, industry-leading, risk-based solutions. This involves both technical understanding, but also the ability to partner extremely well cross-functionally with Lawyers, Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers.

You Will

  • Lead a team of PCMs to enable the business in meeting their strategic priorities, while effectively managing risks;
  • Continue to define and build out Block's overall vision for Bitcoin Compliance, establishing strategic priorities, and executing against them;
  • Partner closely with executives within the Business to understand their priorities and roadmap, advise on Compliance risks, and establish ongoing cadences to maintain excellent communication;
  • Oversee the launch of new product development efforts, ensuring Block maintains adequate review and oversight prior to launch, while providing advisory support throughout the process;
  • Analyze jurisdictional regulations and develop policies and procedures designed to meet applicable cryptocurrency, AML, money transmission, remittance or otherwise applicable regulatory requirements
  • Investigate and respond to compliance risk issues and regulatory inquiries, including preparing required documentation and making recommendations to senior management
  • Provide general support for responses to internal and external audits and examinations

You Have

  • 10+ years of experience in financial services regulation
  • Executive experience building AML/CTF and sanctions compliance programs
  • 6+ years of people management experience with a dedication to building diverse teams
  • Demonstrated interest in cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, blockchain technology or decentralized finance (DeFi).
  • Experience in a related Compliance program preferred
  • Experience working directly with regulatory and legislative bodies
  • Developed working relationships with diverse groups within an organization (legal, product, engineering, finance, people, and others) and with external partners and vendors
  • Desire to work in a fast paced, rapidly shifting environment
  • Experience with executive level communication
  • Capacity to meet deadlines while maintaining quality standards and ensuring effective time management
  • FinTech experience preferred but not required
