About the Role
The Dispensing Nurse supports the medical team within the Opiate Treatment Program by safely dispensing methadone and other approved medications to patients receiving substance use treatment. This role ensures medication accuracy, compliance with federal and state regulations, and compassionate patient interaction. The position requires precision, attention to detail, and adherence to medical and ethical standards in all aspects of patient care.
The Dispensing Nurse collaborates closely with the Medical Director, Physician, and Clinical Program Director to promote safety, consistency, and respect within a fast-paced treatment environment.
Key Responsibilities- Dispense methadone and other prescribed medications in accordance with physician orders, DEA, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
- Accurately document all medication administration in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Methasoft systems.
- Observe and document patient condition, noting signs of withdrawal, intoxication, or adverse reaction, and promptly report findings to the appropriate medical staff.
- Maintain precise medication counts, inventory control, and secure storage of controlled substances.
- Uphold clinic cleanliness and safety standards within the medication dispensing area.
- Support interdisciplinary communication and care coordination across the medical and clinical teams.
- Attend required training sessions, maintain certifications, and actively participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Adhere to HIPAA, OSHA, and all applicable regulatory standards governing patient confidentiality and safety.
- Demonstrate professionalism, empathy, and nonjudgmental communication with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support clinic operations.
- Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of New Mexico.
- Experience in behavioral health, substance use treatment, or medical clinic settings preferred.
- Strong documentation and data-entry skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and electronic health systems.
- Willingness to train in Methasoft and facility-specific EHR systems.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality at all times.
- Dependable attendance, punctuality, and adherence to clinical schedules.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching during clinical operations.
- Regular use of fine motor skills for medication preparation and documentation.
- Occasional lifting of materials up to 25 pounds.
- Exposure to emotionally sensitive situations and patients in distress; personal protective equipment provided and required as appropriate.

- Valid RN or LPN license in the state of employment.
