Under the general supervision of a supervisor or foreman in the Office of Operations, performs skilled and unskilled manual labor tasks in the maintenance, construction and repair of City roadways; operates and maintains small hand and power tools and less complex heavy equipment; does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES- Performs related duties as required.
- Operates hand and power equipment and tools, including but not limited to, mowers, drills, saws and jackhammers.
- Operates dump trucks, snowplows, and sanding equipment.
- Loads and unloads materials and supplies.
- Repairs sewer lines.
- Raises and lowers manhole/catch basin covers.
- Cuts grass and weeds with hand or power mower.
- Picks up and disposes of papers, debris, leaves and branches.
- Cleans sidewalks, streets, gutters, and catch basins.
- Shovels snow and does necessary sanding and salting.
- Works with asphalt to repair potholes, curbing, aprons and sidewalks.
- Follows assigned route on a schedule.
- Trains on heavy equipment such as front loaders, backhoes, spreaders, sweepers and vactors.
- Checks before operating and during the work period, oil and other lubrication levels, tire pressure and general condition of vehicle.
- Assists Heavy Equipment Operators in more skilled operations.
- Assists mechanic in equipment overhauling operations.
- Uses safety precautions in the operations of the equipment and advises supervisor of unusual conditions that may require more specialized attention.
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Some knowledge of the basic practices of the construction and maintenance trade.
- Skill in the operation and minor routine maintenance of heavy vehicular equipment.
- Ability to use and make minor repairs to small tools and simpler mechanical equipment.
- Working knowledge of traffic and safety rules and regulations.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability for strength and endurance despite adverse conditions.
Two (2) years of experience in Public Works activities or in the construction trade, one (1) which must have involved the operation of heavy equipment OR two (2) years' experience operating heavy equipment in another work setting OR two (2) years of experience as a Laborer with the City of Stamford.
SCOPE OF EXAMINATION: Candidates for the position of Equipment Operator will be required to participate in a driving performance examination to demonstrate their ability to safely and effectively operate the required equipment.
NOTE: Candidates for the position of Equipment Operator must possess a current and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be required to submit a completed release form and a copy of their CDL to allow the City of Stamford to obtain their driving history prior to participating in the driving performance examination.
City of Stamford Driving Record Standards for Positions Requiring a Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
Candidates who do not satisfy both requirements below will be disqualified.
A. No more than five (5) points currently assessed on the record; and
B. No conviction in the past five (5) years for a major motor vehicle Violation, including, but not limited to:
- driving during a period while license is under suspension or revoked;
- driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs;
- eluding or attempting to elude a police officer;
- failure to stop and report when involved in an accident;
- homicide or assault arising out of the operation of a motor vehicle;
- loaning an operator's license or registration;
- operating a vehicle without the owner's permission;
- racing or engaging in a speed contest; or
- reckless, careless, or negligent driving.
Moving violations of a minor nature within the past twelve (12) months shall be reviewed by Human Resources and the hiring manager on a case-by-case basis and may be disqualifying.
