Basic Job Description: To develop students' interest, abilities, talents, and skills for artistic expression and creativity in the visual arts, as well as aesthetic understanding and appreciation by implementing approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; developing lesson plans; modeling the necessary skills to performing assigned tasks; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.
Reports to: Principal
- Develops and administers school art curriculum consistent with Diocesan school goals and objectives.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for art instruction.
- Teaches knowledge and skills in art, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, and three-dimensional art to pupils, following the course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities.
- Provides instruction by which pupils develop aesthetic concepts and appreciation and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art, art appreciation and what constitutes art.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student skills and learning in artistic techniques and expression, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
- Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling, using standard and teacher-prepared instructional aids.
- Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.
- Instructs pupils in proper care and use of tools and equipment used in art classes.
- Evaluates each pupil's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepares progress reports.
- Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit pupils' work for the school and the community. May sponsor exhibits from outside.
- Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
- Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Coordinates with other school professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
- Selects and requisitions appropriate books, art materials, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
Responsibilities/Tasks for Elementary School Teacher:
- Prepare for assigned classes and show written evidence of preparation upon the request of immediate supervisors.
- Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
- Confer with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning while following approved curricula.
- Prepare objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum guidelines and requirements of the state, diocese, and school.
- Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
- Prepare students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and persevere with challenging tasks.
- Select, store, order, issue, and inventory classroom equipment, materials, and supplies. Prepare, organize, and label materials. Prepare the classroom for class activities. Create displays of students' work.
- Provide a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use, both in learning activities and in imaginative play.
- Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, or other experiential activities. Guide students in learning from those activities.
- Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
- Organize and lead activities, such as games, arts and crafts, music, and storytelling, to promote physical, mental, and social development.
- Read books to entire classes or small groups.
- Use computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
- Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials to prevent injuries and damage.
- Assign and grade classwork and homework.
- Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress.
- Administer standardized ability and achievement tests and interpret results to determine student strengths and areas of need.
- Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
- Guide and counsel students with adjustment and/or academic problems, or special academic interests.
- Prepare and implement remedial programs for students requiring extra help.
- Confer with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, administrators, and other professionals to discuss and resolve individual students' progress, needs, behavioral issues, and academic problems.
- Meet with parents and guardians to discuss their children's progress, determine their priorities, and evaluate their resource needs.
- Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, diocesan policies, and administrative regulations.
- Prepare reports on students and activities as required by the administration.
- Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.
- Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
- Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
- Collaborate with other teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of elementary school programs.
- Maintain and improve professional competence for Pennsylvania Act 48 by attending professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
- Supervise, evaluate, and plan assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers.
- Involve parent volunteers and older students in children's activities in order to facilitate involvement in focused, complex play.
- Provide disabled students with assistive devices, supportive technology, and assistance accessing facilities such as restrooms.
- Perform administrative duties such as assisting in school libraries, hall and cafeteria monitoring, and bus loading and unloading.
- Sponsor extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and academic contests.
- Prepare and supervise students for Mass as well as other sacramental preparations.

- Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to perform all the technological requirements of classroom management.
- Must be able to hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels and in an outdoor environment.
- Must be able to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in both a normal classroom environment and in an outdoor setting.
- Must have the physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities Required)
- Must possess a Bachelor's degree, preferably in art, education, or a related field.
- Active Instructional certification preferred, otherwise be willing to work towards obtaining one.
- Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.
- Must comply with PA State clearance requirements.
- Must be willing to respect the Catholic faith and comply with our code of conduct.
