Overview

The
Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Technologies Division
, within the National Security Directorate, works across fundamental science, research and development, and operations to counter emerging national security threats. We focus on discovering signatures and understanding threats by creating materials, methods, and technologies to detect and analyze them. Our researchers deliver the solutions necessary for addressing complex mission challenges, such as explosives detection, biological threat detection, chemical and nuclear forensics, and special nuclear materials.

Responsibilities
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a
Post Bachelors Research Associate
to support research in computational materials science and data-driven modeling. This position provides an opportunity to contribute to impactful scientific research while developing advanced technical skills in data science, numerical modeling, and software development. The role is designed for recent graduates who are interested in gaining hand-on research experience in preparation for advanced study or a long-term research career.

  • Assist in the development and application of computational and data analysis methods to support materials and nuclear science research.
  • Build and optimize data pipelines, visualization tools, and analysis frameworks to process experimental and simulation results.
  • Contribute to software development and testing, including automation, version control, and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams to analyze results and prepare technical reports, presentations, and publications.
  • Adhere to laboratory best practices for reproducibiity, data integrity, and scientific rigor.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, physics, mathematics, engineering, or a related STEM discipline.
  • Demonstrated programming experience in Python; familiarity with additional languages (e.g., R, C++, or Java) is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of data science methods, statistical analysis, or computational modeling.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written and oral communication abilities.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team research environment.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have received a Bachelor's degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors in Physics, Mathematics, or Computational Science.
  • Prior research or internship experience in computational science, data-intensive research, or materials/nuclear science.
  • Experience with scientific computing libraries (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, SciPy) or numerical modeling frameworks (e.g., MOOSE).
  • Demonstrated ability to design or support full-stack applications, data processing pipelines, or experimental analysis tools.
  • Familiarity with software development practices, including version control (e.g., GIT) and technical documentation.

Security, Credentialing, And Eligibility Requirements
As a national laboratory, PNNL is responsible for adhering to the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which require new employees to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identify Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete the applicable tier of federal background investigation post hire and receive a favorable federal adjudication. The tier of federal background investigation will be determined by job duties and national security or public trust responsibilities associated with the job. All tiers of investigation include a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last 1 to 7 years (depending on the applicable tier of investigation). Illegal drug activities include marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

For Foreign National Candidates
If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) Federal risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement thereafter, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment. The tier of federal background investigation required to obtain the PIV credential will be determined by job duties at the time you become eligible for the PIV credential.
