Mechanical Design Engineer - Troy, MI Plant

General Scope of Responsibility: Develop, implement and change processes related to machine and fixture design.

DUTIES & ELEMENTS:

Responsibilities:

• Develop mechanical design solutions based on engineering principles.
• Provide technical support to external and internal customers.
• Resolve operational problems related to projects and minimize delays or unexpected cost increases.
• Responsible for project success whether project leader or as part of a project team.
• Ensure all relevant safety objectives and legal requirements are observed for all work completed.
• Support plants in pre-sales technical concept and budgeting activities.
• Interpret project requirements, identify and address design parameters and engineering problems and ensure solutions are implemented accurately and within budget.
• Create and finalize machine and fixture designs to meet project requirements.
• Create mechanical drawings, user's manuals, and accurate bill of materials.
• Define equipment and parts from external suppliers.
• Conduct cost and time estimation.
• Oversee project workflow and support internal and external resources to ensure timely delivery of projects, expected quality, and allotted budget.
• Maintain project scope and identify project creep.
• Maintain accurate records and files according to standards.
• Commission customized products and systems onsite and at customer facilities.
• Modify systems upon customer's request and document the amendments accordingly.
• Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Work Experience, etc.):

Minimum [Must have to be considered for the position]:

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (or similar related degree).
• 3-5 years related job experience.
• Proficient in mechanical design (CAD) software.
• Strong fundamental knowledge of mechanical engineering and its application in automated industrial designs.
• The ability to efficiently organize and plan work tasks to meet company goals.
• Exceptional problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and in team environments.
• Be proactive, resourceful & highly motivated with good communication skills.
• Able to work in a high-output environment.
• Experience balancing multiple projcts.
• Able to travel as required to support projects.

Desired:

• Proficiency in SolidWorks.
• Experience in automated machine design.
• Hands-on experience with shop tools.
• A working knowledge of plant processes.

HUMAN RELATIONS:

The Mechanical Design Engineer (MDE) works closely with and often serves as support for several different departments and personnel. As a result, and to achieve optimum effectiveness, the MDE must maintain a positive, cooperative relationship with various departments/individuals and must be responsive to their needs.

The MDE interacts with all levels of the organization, i.e., with operators through senior managers. To be effective, the MDE must be sensitive to, and cooperatively blend the needs and goals of the various levels of the organization with the common denominator of 'achieving organizational objectives,' i.e., effective launches, safety, quality, productivity, cost reduction, and positive employee/ employer relations.

Finally, in the role of a problem solver, the MDE must remain objective and be able to make recommendations based on facts, regardless of whether those recommendations are popular.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Able to lift fifty pounds at times. Must be able to access and navigate all areas in the facility and access all machinery.
