General Purpose
The Supply Chain Data Scientist is an individual contributor role and will be responsible for elevating the analytical capabilities within the Ross Supply Chain and leading sophisticated analyses in support of strategic projects.

  • Helps drive decision making through operations research
  • Identifies supply chain opportunities and efficiencies, communicating results in a logical, structural way to senior leaders.
  • Works in close partnership with the Engineering team and other cross-functional partners.

Essential Functions
Perform practical, action oriented, & comprehensive data analyses to diagnose business problems, optimize approaches and measure impact.

  • Understand end-to-end supply chain physical operations and related metrics. Be able to explain key distribution center processes
  • Manipulate and analyze large data sets across various systems
  • Determine root causes, business drivers and opportunities through modeling, statistical analyses, optimization and simulation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, analysts and business stakeholders to gather inputs, validate assumptions and review outputs.
  • Interpret results from models and generate recommendations to provide insights to leadership teams and business partners.
  • Work closely with areas like Marketing, Planning, Store Operations, DCs and others.

Approach operations research with highly collaborative and robust methodologies.

  • Lead the build out of advanced data capabilities at Ross using a project management approach; effectively communicating and partnering with the appropriate parties.
  • Utilize operations research methodologies to solve complex business problems.
  • Keep current with new analytical /statistical methodologies or capabilities, especially when analysis could benefit from new techniques.
  • Recommend upgrades or external trainings as needed.
  • Adopt new technologies and/or methodologies and train others on them.

Communicate analytics, recommendations in easy-to-understand ways (written and verbal)

  • Develop compelling materials appropriate for senior executives, to communicate operations situations from a data perspective, results of analyses and key insights.
  • Effectively communicate to all levels including DC operations and executive leaders.

Ad hoc support

  • Become the point person / subject matter expert for ad hoc questions from cross-functional business partners.

Qualifications And Special Skills Required

  • Minimum 5 years post college experience, with experience in analytical positions. Relevant retail/Supply Chain experience preferred
  • MS in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or equivalent work experience
  • 3+ years of experience in supply chain optimization, simulation and probability statistics
  • Deep understanding of statistics, data mining techniques and tools to analyze/derive insights from historical data, modeling or experiment results
  • Outstanding analytical ability: Must have a data driven approach to solving problems. Requires very strong quantitative skills and a good sense of how to structure problems.
  • Project Management: Must be able to follow classic life cycle elements including gathering/documenting business requirements, coding, testing, collaboration with users, etc. Has to be able to set priorities between multiple projects and deadlines, and keep senior team updated frequently.
  • Detail-oriented approach: Must have very close attention to details and the drive to get things right; able to meet tight timelines.
  • Must be experienced in SQL, Power BI and/or Tableau, Excel and PowerPoint, plus at least one large data mining tool or statistical programming language (e.g. SPSS, Python, R).
  • Excellent communication skill with the ability to clearly tell data driven stories through appropriate visualizations, graphs, and narratives. Must be able to listen, understand, and communicate with executives at all levels of the company. Must be able to translate data analyses into recommendations in a clear, understandable way.
  • Teamwork: Needs to be able to build effective working relationships across the organization.

Job requires ability to work in an office environment, primarily on a computer.

Requires sitting, standing, walking, hearing, talking on the telephone, attending in-person meetings, typing, and working with paper/files, etc.

Consistent timeliness and regular attendance.

Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.

This role requires regular in-office presence, including to engage in in-person team interaction, meetings and collaboration, client support, mentoring, coaching, and/or feedback. However, this role can perform duties effectively using a combination of in-office and remote work.
