Conventional Mortgage Underwriter

Location for this role: Remote
The Underwriter will review all loan documents and data in a loan file with the goal of rendering an Underwriting decision based on the loan characteristics, including but not limited to the Borrower's ability to repay (income, employment, and assets), Borrower's credit history, and the collateral (property). UWs are granted Lending Authority based on their experience and their performance on initial test cases. Once the Lending Authority is received, they underwrite loans in accordance with regulatory requirements, Investor guidelines, and Truist overlays. Underwriter responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Responsibilities will include:
- The ideal candidate will have over three to four years of experience independently underwriting residential mortgage loans, expert analytical skills, with DU & LP experience
- Underwrites mortgage loan applications and evaluates loans in order to maximize organizational profit and minimize risk or loss.
- Responsible for ensuring all documentation meets program and AUS requirements
- Reviews and validates income and asset documentation
- Reviews AUS findings
- Issues with underwriting decision and notifications of clear to close
- Reviews all credit documentation
- Reviews and approves all Trusts
- Ensure adherence to any client overlays
- Mortgage Insurance certs
- Issues, Denials, and 2nd-tier manager reviews
- Suspend the file if credit decisions are unable to be rendered
- Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
Qualifications
Basic
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent required from an accredited institution. Will also consider three years of progressive experience in the specialty in lieu of every year of education.
- At least 4 years of relevant work experience
Preferred
- Familiar with standard mortgage concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
- Should have working knowledge of any Mortgage loan origination application. Preferably, the BKFS application – Empower, MSP
- Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
- Performs a variety of tasks.
- Excellent mathematical and statistical aptitude.
- A certain degree of creativity and latitude is expected
