Senior Development and Engineering Manager

About the Role

Focused on building modern platforms that enable businesses to book, manage, and optimize travel at scale. We are investing in the evolution of our core technology platform and are looking for a senior engineering leader to help guide teams through that transformation.

This role sits within a multi-site engineering organization and combines technical leadership, people leadership, and hands-on contribution. You will work closely with engineering teams, product management, and operations to deliver scalable, reliable backend systems while continuously improving how software is designed, built, and delivered.

Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership

Provide architectural direction for scalable, resilient, and high-performance backend systems.

  • Guide the design and implementation of cloud-native services and APIs.
  • Participate in system design discussions, architectural planning, and technical decision-making.
  • Review code and designs to ensure quality, consistency, and maintainability.

Hands-On Engineering

Contribute production-ready code as needed to support team delivery and technical initiatives.

  • Support the development of backend services, APIs, and integrations with internal and third-party systems.
  • Help establish and reinforce engineering standards, best practices, and design patterns.

Team & Delivery Leadership

  • Lead and mentor engineers across one or more teams.
  • Partner with product management, QA, and DevOps to plan and deliver high-impact features.
  • Support Agile/Scrum practices and continuous improvement across teams.
  • Foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, and technical excellence.

Platform & Operational Excellence

  • Ensure systems are observable, reliable, and supportable in production.
  • Guide practices related to logging, monitoring, alerting, and incident response.
  • Balance delivery speed with long-term platform health and sustainability.

Required Skills & Experience

Backend Development & Architecture

  • Extensive experience in backend development, preferably with
  • Strong experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservices.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, system design, and backend engineering principles.
  • Experience with serverless and container-based architectures (e.g., AWS Lambda, ECS, Docker, Fargate).

Cloud & DevOps

  • Hands-on experience with AWS services such as API Gateway, DynamoDB, SQS, RDS, S3, CloudWatch, and infrastructure-as-code tools (CloudFormation and/or CDK).
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices.
  • Familiarity with operating and supporting production systems in cloud environments.

Databases

  • Experience working with both relational (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (e.g., DynamoDB) databases.
  • Strong data modeling and query optimization skills.

General

  • Strong foundation in software engineering best practices, design patterns, and code quality standards.
  • Experience using Git and automated testing frameworks.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and comfortable taking ownership of complex initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a senior engineering leadership role (Senior Manager, Director, or equivalent).
  • Experience supporting or modernizing large or legacy platforms.
  • Experience in the travel, booking, or transactional technology domain.

Education

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field or equivalent professional experience.
