PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The primary responsibility of the Physical Education Teacher is to promote a) physical activity and the attainment of physical fitness; b) physical skills and general coordination c) good safety practices d) creative movement e) group and individual activities f) leadership and responsibility g) reinforce other academic areas where possible.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
- Develop unit and lesson plans in curriculum areas according to NYS requirements P.E and Health with consideration for needs and abilities of diverse student learners.
- Follow daily schedules, submit monthly unit plans, and maintain a daily lesson plan book.
- Leave emergency lessons and materials available at all times for substitute, if needed.
- Implement educational approaches with approval of Supervisor and within the framework
- Prepare for special programs, shows and events as needed.
- Attend all meetings related to the position (departments, school, team, parent-student, consultants, etc.)
LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATION:
- Use appropriate language and communication methodology required for each student
MANAGEMENT:
- Manage student behavior using current best practices (Seek guidance/assistance for more complex
3.1 Share duties and special supervision according to schedules and department needs.
3.2 Support all facets of student development.
RELATED RESPONSIBILITIES:
4.1 Consult with classroom teachers and provide ideas for recess and classroom activities that promote the P.E. and Health curriculum.
4.2 Consult with staff to provide activities and programming for a variety of student's abilities.
4.3 Participate in workshops.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- B.A. or B.S. in an Education related area (physical education preferred)
- NYS Certification in Physical Education and or NYS Certification Teacher of the Deaf
- Preschool or Early Childhood Education, Special Education (preferred, not required)
- Sign Language Skills, SCPI (or equivalent) proficiency level preferred and as per Personnel Policy.
- Participate in in-service programs offered by school and to engage in course work recommended by administration as indication of continuing professional growth
- Ability to work with typical and atypical learners
- Ability to utilize multi-disciplinary recommendations, in overall programming and/or specific
- Possess preventative behavior management skills that are positive and child-centered
- Ability to work as a team with other staff in the classroom setting
- Ability to work collaboratively with school staff across grades, disciplines and responsibilities
- Adherence to SJSD Personnel Policies and School Procedure and Student Policy Manual
- Health, accident, disability, retirement, annuity and dental plans available
- Personal leave as indicated in personnel policies
- Multi-disciplinary staff available for consultation
