The role – what you'll do

Barr is seeking a senior environmental engineer to join our Bismarck team. In this hybrid role, you will support the Assessment and Remediation business unit. Work assignments may include managing multidisciplinary teams; preparing technical work plans and reports; coordinating ASTM Phase I environmental site assessments; investigating contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, and vapor intrusion; conducting remediation technology evaluations and feasibility studies; developing site management strategies, remedial design, and response action plans; and coordinating site remediation activities.

Project responsibilities may also include preparing cost estimates and contracting for investigation activities; developing proposals, scopes of work, and budgets; conducting communications, meetings, and negotiations with clients and regulatory agency personnel; providing overall project management; and mentoring junior staff. Business development activities may include interacting with clients to identify and develop new project opportunities, which will include maintaining strong relationships with clients, developing proposals, and networking with clients and project partners at conferences.

The ideal candidate for this position is a clear and confident communicator who thrives in collaborative and independent work settings. They are adaptable, organized, and solutions-oriented, with strong analytical skills and a high level of attention to detail. They take initiative and demonstrate sound judgment in dynamic environments, often balancing technical rigor with client and regulatory needs. For senior-level professionals, the ability to mentor junior staff, lead multidisciplinary teams, and develop long-term client relationships is key. Above all, they are committed to teamwork, integrity, and delivering high-quality, impactful environmental solutions.

Your impact – key responsibilities

  • Technical knowledge: apply environmental engineering expertise to investigate contaminated soil, groundwater, sediment, and vapor, and to develop and implement effective remediation strategies, feasibility studies, and site management plans.

  • Project management: oversee complex project scopes, schedules, and budgets while coordinating fieldwork, managing contractors, and helping ensure deliverables meet quality standards and client expectations.

  • Problem solving: evaluate environmental data and site-specific conditions to design practical, tailored solutions that meet technical objectives and regulatory requirements.

  • Communication: prepare clear, technically sound reports, work plans, and proposals; engage confidently in meetings and negotiations with clients, regulators, and project partners.

  • Interpersonal savvy: build and maintain strong relationships with clients, colleagues, and regulators through proactive communication, teamwork, and a client-focused approach to problem-solving and project delivery.

About the opportunity

  • Compensation: anticipated range of $100,000–$125,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Bismarck, North Dakota, office.

  • Travel expectation: willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs (including up to 10% travel and fieldwork; project needs will vary seasonally and overtime).

  • Work environment: ability to work in locations that may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Physical requirements for the role may include:

  • Ability to conduct fieldwork in varying outdoor conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, uneven terrain).

  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Capable of standing, walking, kneeling, or crouching for extended periods.

  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by site conditions.

  • Ability to safely operate or work around environmental monitoring and sampling equipment.

  • Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation

About you – required core competencies

  • Education: bachelor's degree in environmental, civil, geological, or chemical engineering or related discipline.

  • Experience: 10 or more years of relevant experience.

  • Licenses/certifications: registered Professional Engineer (PE) or ability to become registered within one year.

  • Software: strong computer skills, including word processing and use of spreadsheets. Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite.
