GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Jail Entry Receptionist is responsible for face to face as well as over the phone interactions with members of the public conducting various levels of service within the Newport News Sheriff's Office.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Manage distribution and documentation of equipment to include keys, handcuffs, leg-irons for jail and courts
  • Manage, document and coordinate inmate visits with attorneys and other Criminal Justice Agency officials
  • Screen and document all facility visitors, instructors and volunteers
  • Documentation and distribution of inmate personal property
  • Answer multiple telephone lines and assist the public and other agency officials with inmate information
  • Use of agency computers and various Microsoft applications
  • Manage, monitor and operate two-way radios
  • Document and route vendor deliveries to appropriate departments
  • Monitor court duress and fire alarm systems for public safety

buildings and courts

  • Assist local hospitals and magistrates office with the coordination and transport of Temporary Detention Orders

Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS

REQUIRED ABILITIES

Communication – Excellent ability to communicate complex ideas effectively so others will understand to include preparation of reports and policies. Ability to handle a variety of citizen and or staff inquires with tact, diplomacy and in a confidential manner.

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or G.E.D Certificate

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Acceptable background check and acceptable credit check
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Pre-Employment drug screen and physical, annually thereafter
  • Refrain from all use of controlled substances and are subject to random controlled substances testing.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort
  • Some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
  • Some lifting to include overhead lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight pounds)

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

  • Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals
  • Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally

ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as odors, hazardous materials, disease, and pathogenic substances
