Director of Underwriting – Captive Insurance
Location – Houston, Texas
Position Summary
The Director of Insurance Underwriting will lead all aspects of the underwriting process for Aurora's captive insurance programs. This includes oversight of risk assessments, policy structuring, pricing, and underwriting compliance in coordination with regulatory requirements and client objectives.
The ideal candidate has deep expertise in captive insurance, strong technical underwriting and analytical skills, and a proven ability to collaborate with executive leadership, regulators, actuaries, and clients to deliver exceptional results.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the underwriting strategy, processes, and standards for all captive insurance programs under Aurora's management.
- Evaluate and price risks across multiple lines of coverage, including property, casualty, professional liability, and specialty programs.
- Oversee the renewal and new business underwriting cycle, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with domicile regulations.
- Collaborate with actuaries, accountants, and legal teams to ensure sound underwriting assumptions and policy documentation.
- Serve as the primary technical underwriting resource for Aurora's internal teams and clients.
- Review and approve underwriting submissions, policy forms, and endorsements.
- Maintain awareness of market trends, regulatory updates, and captive best practices to enhance underwriting efficiency and client service.
- Support client relationship management and participate in key account reviews and renewal meetings.
- Mentor and develop underwriting staff to ensure consistent quality and professional growth.
Qualifications
- Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation required.
- Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Finance, or related field (Master's preferred).
- 5–10 years of experience in commercial or captive insurance underwriting, with a strong preference for candidates with captive management experience.
- Strong technical knowledge of policy language, rating methodologies, and regulatory frameworks for captives.
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, and client-facing skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced professional environment.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and insurance management software.
