Job Summary

This is confidential work providing professional social services, support groups and home visits with the goal of assisting seniors, children, and their families in maintaining or improving their quality of life. Develops educational and support programs for caregivers with the goal of alleviating stress and assisting elders to remain in their homes. Works under general supervision and receives training and guidance from a Social Worker II/III. Reports to a Social Worker III or designee.

Essential Functions
  • Conducts assessments and determines applicant eligibility for various services or benefits.
  • Conducts interviews with clients and their families to assess and review their situation and circumstances.
  • Delivers a variety of services to diverse community.
  • Facilitates support groups and individual counseling with clients and their families.
  • Assists in obtaining referral services and maintaining current outreach community resources.
  • Performs home visits for assessments and delivers services for homebound seniors.
  • Maintains written confidential client records and provides all required documentation, as needed.
  • Prepares and maintains correspondence, case notes, narrative and program reports, and related documents using computer-based applications.
  • Assists with financial benefit programs such as Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP) and Miramar Assisting Seniors in their Homes (MASH).
  • Interacts and communicates with immediate supervisor, other departmental supervisors and employees, other City personnel, clients/passengers, and the general public.
  • Maintains compliance with all applicable regulations, laws and statutes.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Social Work, Counseling or Psychology.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in social work, including experience working with children or geriatric populations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software applications.
  • Possess a valid Florida driver's license.
  • Possess First Aid and CPR certifications or obtain within 90 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual (Spanish or Creole)

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices relating to social work and the provision of social services.
  • Knowledge of public, private, and non-profit social service programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to adapt to an evolving and continually changing environment.
  • Ability to respond to supervision, guidance and direction of superiors in a positive, receptive manner.
  • Ability to demonstrate a polite, helpful and courteous manner when engaged with the public.
  • Ability to operate and care for equipment to manufacturer's specifications.
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding, consideration, and respect of diverse clients of varied ages, cultural, religious, socio-economic and mental and/or physical abilities and gender differences when interacting with colleagues and the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires light physical effort including lifting up to 25 pounds. May require occasional crouching, kneeling, bending, or stooping. Frequent periods of standing or walking may be required.

GENERAL BENEFITS:

The City of Miramar provides benefits for its permanent full-time and part-time employees. Benefits will differ dependent upon the job classification and representation, which include union and unrepresented. Information about the exact benefits applicable to a particular job classification may be obtained from the City of Miramar Human Resources Department.

Vacation

Permanent full-time employees earn up to ten days of vacation during their first year of employment. Accrual begins from the first month of employment, but cannot be used until after the third month of employment.

Permanent part-time employees have the opportunity to earn vacation after the completion of one year of continuous service.

Sick Leave

Permanent full-time employees accrue sick leave at the rate of one day per month. Accrual begins from the first month of employment, but cannot be used until after the third month of employment.

Permanent part-time employees have the opportunity to earn sick leave after the completion of one year of continuous service.

Health Plan

The City currently provides medical coverage through Aetna. The City pays the health insurance premium for the employee and 50% of the premium for dependents.

Permanent full-time employees have the option of electing coverage from three plans: Health Network Only Plan (HMO), High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with HSA and Open Access Managed Choice Plan (POS).

Permanent part-time employees have the option of electing coverage from two plans: Health Network Only Plan (HMO) and the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)

The City also offers Dental coverage through Delta Dental.

Pension (Defined Benefit Plan)

Permanent full-time employees are automatically enrolled in one of the City sponsored pension plans, which are funded by mandatory City and employee contributions. The Plan provides a guaranteed income, based on years of service, to its members upon retirement.

457(b) Plan (Deferred Compensation Plan)

Employees can elect to participate in this Plan, which enables the employee the option of deferring compensation on a pretax basis, not to exceed the applicable limits established by the IRC.

The City of Miramar provides an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for employees and their eligible dependents. The EAP offers confidential, professional counseling services in areas such as:

Child Care Provider Discounts

As a City of Miramar employee, you may be eligible to receive a discount on tuition and/or registration fees from one of the City's childcare centers.

The City offers regular employees two separate Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA's that provide employees the ability to make pree-tax payroll deposits to be used for the following expenses:
