ROLE: TEACHER

The position is responsible for creating a classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth of every student; establishing effective rapport with students; motivating students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for becoming a responsible citizen in accordance with each pupil's ability; and establishing good relationships with parents and other staff members.

  • Instructs students in a program of study that meets stated objectives and provides transfer of knowledge.
  • Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in the state law and administrative regulations and procedures of Charlottesville City Schools.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials, and provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Guides the learning process toward achieving all IEP goals and establishes clear objectives for the students.
  • Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, keeps appropriate records to include attendance as appropriate, checklists, and other recordkeeping as necessary.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students regularly, seeking the assistance of appropriate personnel to provide accurate and objective statements relevant to student progress in a timely manner.
  • Communicates regularly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress.

ROLE: INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT

The job of Instructional Assistant involves assisting in the achievement of class and individual student objectives by working with individual and/or small groups of students under the supervision of a classroom teacher; preparing assigned classroom projects; and providing clerical support to teacher/s.

  • Administers tests, homework assignments, make-up work, etc., for the purpose of supporting teachers in the instructional process.
  • Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
  • Guides students in independent study (e.g. enrichment work, remedial work, listening to children, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student success.
  • Implements, under the supervision of a classroom teacher, instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving students' academic success through a defined course of study.
  • Prepares documents as may be required by the teacher (e.g. memos, displays, etc.) for the purpose of providing written documentation and/or conveying information.
