Job Summary

Lawyers for Children provides direct legal representation of clients ages newborn to 21 in the New York Family Court in neglect and abuse, foster care, custody and visitation, orders of protection, guardianship, termination of parental rights, adoption, youth justice, and related proceedings. Lawyers For Children attorneys work alongside our social workers as a team.

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Part-time Appellate Attorney to assist with drafting and responding to appeals arising from complex family court matters. This role is ideal for an attorney who excels in legal research and writing and is interested in flexible, remote appellate work.

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze trial court records, transcripts, and rulings from family court proceedings
  • Conduct legal research on relevant case law, statutes, and regulations
  • Draft appellate briefs, motions, and responses/oppositions to appellate filings
  • Assist with issue spotting, legal strategy, and appellate analysis in family law cases

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and admission in good standing to the NYS Bar
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage deadlines in a remote environment
  • Familiarity with appellate practice is strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to the rights of children and youth
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure and in emergent situations.
  • Able to deliver inclusive, culturally attuned services rooted in antiracist principles and equity-driven practices for clients, colleagues, courts, and the child welfare systems
  • Strong courtroom presence and the confidence to advocate assertively, even in challenging situations, while maintaining professionalism

Preferred (but not required) Experience

  • Experience or familiarity with New York family law and/or appellate practice strongly preferred
  • Prior work on appeals or substantial legal writing experience

Candidates without direct New York family law or appellate experience are encouraged to apply if they demonstrate strong research and writing skills and the ability to learn quickly.

Work Arrangement & Benefits

  • Part-time hourly position. Hours will vary up to a maximum of 20 hours a week
  • Hourly Wage is $56.00 per hour, depending on date of admission to the bar, experience, and qualifications
  • Fully remote with highly flexible scheduling
  • This position is not benefit eligible
