POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general direction of the Nurse, the CNA is responsible for duties not requiring a nursing license or certification. The CNA provides support to the nursing department according to licensing and accreditation standards.

CORE COMPETENCIES:
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment by coordinating with other management teams to accomplish related results needed, and by calling for assistance from other health care professionals.
- Assist nurse to ensure that all students meet with community providers as indicated by law and accreditation standard.
- Facilitate correct medication count.
- Administer medications to residents.
- Observe and report changes in condition of residents to supervisor
- Maintain and submit required documents by agency policy and regulatory requirements
- Maintain a cooperative relationship among interdisciplinary teams by communicating information pertinent to staff and student development, responding to requests and participating in team problem-solving methods
- Help identify and implement student care requirements and establish a healthy and compassionate environment
- Provide the protection of students and staff by developing and interpreting infection control policies and protocols and overseeing medication administration, storage procedures and controlled substance regulations.
- Ensure proper storage of all medications including prescription, OTC and narcotic meds.
- Monitor each student medications for all dorms and to check the need for new medication orders, and/or discontinued meds. If a new medication or a refill is needed, contact all pharmacies and fax over correct orders.
- Manage oversight of medication orders utilizing the E-Mar system, ensuring proper documentation.
- Pack any medications for a student that is going on a home pass, off campus activity or being discharged, and prepare required paperwork.
- Check all stock medications including, but not limited to over-the-counter meds, PRN meds, cream, lotions, liquids, band aids, medical supplies, etc.
- Coordinate medical care for students with consideration of client calendar and transportation need.
- Transport residents to appointments when necessary.
- Provide wound care and first aid when necessary.
- Clean work area and help maintain nursing office.
- Maintain documentation of student care services by monitoring confidential information processing and auditing medical department records
- Provide in-service training as necessary
- All other duties as assigned

Requirements:
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED with higher education or vocational training preferred
- At least one year of experience
- A current Certified Nursing Assistant license to practice in the required state (South Dakota)
- A current Certified Medication Aide in required state (South Dakota)
- It is an essential function of the position that the staff member must be capable and proficient in the area of Crisis Prevention when and/or if necessary.
