Sous Chef Responsibilities

The Sous Chef provides full-scope, hands-on production cooking in our community culinary program and is responsible for ensuring excellence in food quality, service, and cleanliness.

  • Exemplify high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and organization
  • Ensure food quality, appearance, and presentation always meet standards
  • Prepare and serve meals in compliance with nutritional/dietary criteria and physician orders
  • Demonstrate speed, accuracy, and efficiency in cooking
  • Regularly visit residents to evaluate food service and make improvements as needed
  • Embrace a culture of hospitality — deliver excellent customer service to residents, guests, and coworkers
  • Plan, prepare, and present meals for residents, activities, and special events
  • Maintain compliance with local codes and policies for food safety and storage
  • Inspect storage areas and ensure supply control
  • Complete administrative duties such as reports and inventory tracking
  • Maintain clean and orderly dining areas
  • Obtain and maintain ServSafe/Food Handler's Permit
  • Foster teamwork and positive interactions across departments
  • Support a professional image through dress and conduct
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Culinary Experience.

Sous Chef Qualifications

  • Minimum1 year of experience in a restaurant, senior living, or equivalent cooking environment.
  • Ability to follow approved, standardized recipes and menus for regular and therapeutic diets.
  • Ability to make independent decisions without supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact tactfully with residents, family members, team members, and the public.
  • Ability to make decisions in stressful situations.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to direct team members effectively.
  • Possess good character and a high degree of personal integrity.
  • Demonstrate genuine concern for the physical and emotional needs of older adults and their families.
  • Required to receive the annual Flu vaccine, excluding religious or medical exemptions.
