Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) works under the direction and supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist to provide goal-directed therapeutic interventions for infants, children, and young adults within the Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, Distinct Part Subacute, and Outpatient Programs.
The COTA assists in implementing treatment plans designed to improve patients' functional abilities in self-care, play, sensory processing, and motor skills. The role involves close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team—including physicians, nurses, physical and speech therapists, respiratory therapists, and case managers—to help each child achieve greater independence and quality of life.
This position offers the opportunity to work with a diverse pediatric population, including those with neurological, orthopedic, and developmental conditions, as well as children with complex medical and technology-assisted needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement occupational therapy treatment plans as developed by the supervising Occupational Therapist, focusing on daily living skills, fine motor development, sensory-motor processing, and play-based activities.
- Observe and report patient performance, progress, and responses to interventions to the supervising therapist.
- Adapt and modify activities or techniques under OT guidance to promote optimal patient outcomes.
- Provide instruction and support to patients, families, and caregivers regarding therapeutic exercises, adaptive strategies, and home programs.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with Totally Kids policies and applicable regulations.
- Assist with fabrication, fitting, and training in the use of splints, adaptive equipment, and assistive technology.
- Promote safety, comfort, and engagement during all treatment sessions.
- Participate in interdisciplinary care conferences, discharge planning, and performance improvement activities.
- Maintain a clean and organized therapy environment and ensure equipment is used safely and appropriately.
Qualifications
Required:
- Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program
- Current California Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA/L) license
- Current CPR/BLS certification (American Heart Association)
- Strong understanding of pediatric development, sensory integration, and therapeutic activity adaptation
Preferred:
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a COTA in a pediatric, acute, or rehabilitation setting
- Experience working with medically fragile, ventilator-dependent, or technology-assisted children
- Familiarity with adaptive equipment, sensory tools, and splinting techniques
- Experience documenting in electronic health record (EHR) systems
