Civil Engineering Technician – Entry Level

The role – what you'll do
Barr is seeking a civil engineering technician to join our Minneapolis, Minnesota, team. In this hybrid role, you will support the Water Resources group on a variety of civil engineering projects. These projects involve data collection, planning, and problem-solving in the water resources field.
A successful person in this role is thorough, organized, and detail-oriented. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, flexible in their working style, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team to meet client needs and project schedules. Strong communication skills and a commitment to quality deliverables are essential.
Your impact – key responsibilities
- CADD and design support: assist with AutoCAD/Civil 3D drafting and design, preparation of construction plans and specifications, and spreadsheet preparation.
- Fieldwork: conduct water quality sampling, perform surveys and field data collection, and construction observation.
- Equipment preparation and monitoring: prepare and monitor sampling equipment for field activities.
- Collaboration: work closely with project team members and clients to deliver high-quality results.
About the opportunity
- Compensation: the anticipated base hourly range for this position is $25–29/hour. This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Barr has a "no retained earnings" model and distributes all its profit to our employees through our bonus plan and ESOP.
- Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Minneapolis, Minnesota, office.
- Work environment: some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
About you – required core competencies
- Education: two-year technical certificate or other relevant degree in combination with equivalent training and work experience directly related to the job responsibilities described above.
- Technical skills: intermediate mathematical and computer skills; familiarity with Autodesk Civil3D software; familiarity with Microsoft 365 Office, specifically Word and Excel.
- Field experience: ability and willingness to conduct fieldwork independently or as part of a team; comfortable working on and around water and/or ice-covered water bodies.
- Organizational skills: thorough and organized approach with strong attention to detail; flexible working style, self-initiative, and motivation; willingness to work with teams to meet clients' needs and project schedules.
- Communication skills: strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with project team members and clients.
- Driver's License: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.
Helpful additional experience (not required)
- Experience with ArcGIS.
- Survey or laser scanning experience.
- Experience preparing cost estimates based on take-offs and for feasibility and construction projects.
- Experience in developing, using, and interpreting construction and site development plans.
- FAA Part 107 sUAS Pilot License.
