Our Care & Crisis Advocates provide safety and support for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. They work with residents in our emergency safe shelter and answer our 24 hour careline. Training is provided

Hours are 4pm-midnight; Tuesday thru Saturday.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Greet and welcome walk-in community members as needed.

· To provide exceptional crisis-line response, prioritize crisis intervention skill building.

· Understand and practice safety-planning with residents experiencing current and historic incidents of domestic violence and sexual assault.

· Conduct shelter intakes and exits, and ensure appropriate information is gathered for handoff to direct service staff.

· Assess all shelter participants' situations to determine the urgency of their need and the nature of services or interventions required. Follow handover process to AWARE's direct service staff (housing, legal and safety) prioritizing immediate needs when appropriate.

· Complete assessment of participant's safety needs that includes immediate as well as long-term risk factors and provide effective referrals to AWARE's care coordination advocates. Provide follow-up and maintenance of safety planning, as requested and in coordination with AWARE direct service staff.

· Acquire basic knowledge of DV/SA-related criminal and civil laws, rights of victims etc. and be able to communicate appropriate information to participants and provide effective referrals to AWARE civil and criminal legal assistance.

· Acquire basic knowledge of housing assistance resources and provide effective referrals to internal and external housing resources.

· Acquire basic knowledge of common mental health issues and substance use disorders and be able to communicate that information to participants. Provide appropriate external referrals for participants seeking more intensive behavioral health and other resource assistance.

· Model problem resolution skills for residents to solve roommate/communal living issues and facilitate resolutions for critical issues.

· Recognize emergencies and act to ensure participant and staff safety. Use de-escalation techniques to defuse tense situations. If needed, request law enforcement assistance and be able to provide critical information to law enforcement. Ensure notification of the manager-on-call and documentation for staff.

  • Conduct safety procedures according to policy and procedures.

  • Responsibility to shelter cleanliness, stocking and maintenance including:

· Perform basic cleaning tasks and maintain the upkeep and cleanliness of shelter.

· Complete chore and laundry responsibilities to ensure cleanliness of shelter according to checklist. When appropriate, involve residents in communal chores.

· Replenish shelter food and supplies. Shelve basement donations and report shortages per protocol.

· Conduct room checks and regular maintenance of common spaces.

· Report maintenance issues per protocol.

  • Assist in the training of new relief, permanent or volunteer shelter staff, as requested.

SALARY: $23.76/hour DOE; 40 hours per week
