Adler University seeks a seasoned, highly strategic, and operationally adept senior vice president for strategy (SVPS) and Chief of Operations (COO) to the President to serve as an operationalizer and enabler, and a senior advisor and trusted partner to the President. SVPS/COO plays a critical leadership role in ensuring operational excellence, driving institution-wide strategic planning, enhancing internal communications, promoting organizational coherence, and supporting the effective governance and development of the Board of Trustees.

As a core member of the executive leadership team, the SVPS/COO provides counsel on key decisions, oversees high-priority initiatives, and ensures the President's vision is clearly articulated and effectively executed across the University. The role also serves as Secretary to the Board of Trustees, leading Board coordination, communication, and development efforts.

This is a high-impact position ideal for an experienced leader with a strong advisory background, in depth operational experience, exceptional judgment, understanding of complex organizations, and a demonstrated ability to operate with discretion, strategic insight, and a deep commitment to mission-driven education.

Education/Experience:

Required

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively senior experience in higher education, nonprofit, government, or other mission-driven sectors.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise executive leadership and manage institution-wide strategic initiatives.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence, build trust, and navigate sensitive issues.
  • Proven experience in organizational planning, project execution, and internal coordination across complex environments.
  • Experience supporting or managing Board governance and engagement.
  • High emotional intelligence, sound judgment, and the ability to act with diplomacy, discretion, and professionalism.

Preferred

  • Prior experience - Chief of Staff, Senior Advisor, or similar executive-facing role.
  • Familiarity with governance structures and operations in academic institutions or nonprofit boards.
  • Understanding of higher education dynamics, especially in mission-aligned or equity-focused institutions.
  • Experience designing or leading strategic planning frameworks and internal communications infrastructure.

Supervision

  • Supervises the Office of the President staff and may oversee temporary project managers, executive support staff, or consultants.
  • Supervises senior leadership in the operational areas of People and Culture, Finance, Facilities, and Information Technology.
  • May be called upon to lead institutional working groups or task forces.

Budgetary Responsibility

  • Oversees the Office of the President budget and collaborates with Finance leadership on institutional resource alignment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Operational Excellence

  • Ensure effective and efficient execution of presidential priorities, including cross-functional initiatives, special projects, and internal operations for the Office. .
  • Streamline internal processes and optimize workflows for executive decision-making, stakeholder engagement, and issue tracking.
  • Collaborate with the senior leadership team (SLT) to improve performance and accountability in key operational domains.
  • Serve as a bridge between strategic intent and operational execution, ensuring that institutional priorities are translated into coordinated action plans with clear accountability measures.

Advisement

  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the President on critical institutional matters, including emerging risks, stakeholder dynamics, and long-term positioning.
  • Assist SLT execute on Presidential Mission across the institution
  • Provide high-level counsel on executive decisions and help shape agenda-setting, issue framing, and response strategies.
  • Act as a representative or proxy for the President as needed in meetings and internal leadership discussions.
  • Proactively anticipate challenges and opportunities, offer solutions, and facilitate decision-making in alignment with the University's mission and values.
  • Function as the President's principal advisor and integrator, ensuring alignment across executive leadership and fostering a proactive problem-solving culture

Organizational Coherence

  • Align University-wide efforts by ensuring strategic coordination across academic, administrative, and external-facing units.
  • Facilitate collaboration among the President's Cabinet and senior leadership team to ensure clarity of purpose, role, and execution.
  • Lead efforts to build alignment around presidential priorities and institutional values across all campuses and modalities.
  • Provide support to leadership teams in refining organizational structures and practices for clarity, cohesion, and strategic fit.
  • Establish systems for cross-functional coordination and issue tracking, ensuring that the President's initiatives are implemented efficiently and communicated effectively.

Internal Communications

  • Manage (in conjunction with the VP of Advancement and the Executive Dean in Vancouver) internal communications on behalf of the President to ensure clear, timely, and transparent messaging across all levels of the University.
  • Develop, edit, and oversee communications including announcements, updates, memos, speeches, and strategic briefs.
  • Partner with the Communications and Institutional Advancement teams to ensure consistency and alignment in messaging across audiences.
  • Foster a culture of transparency, shared purpose, and institutional pride through regular and thoughtful internal engagement.

Strategic Planning

  • Lead or support the design, implementation, and tracking of Adler's strategic plan, ensuring that initiatives are aligned with mission and measurable goals.
  • Develop systems for institutional priority setting, progress monitoring, and cross-functional accountability.
  • Convene and facilitate strategic planning processes in partnership with the President, Provost, COO, and Board leadership.
  • Translate vision into execution by coordinating strategy deployment efforts and measuring impact over time.

Board of Trustees Engagement & Development

  • Serve as Secretary to the Board of Trustees. Responsible for ensuring timely and clear Board communications, meeting planning, materials preparation, and minutes.
  • Partner with the President and Board Chair (as necessary) to optimize the effectiveness, engagement, and composition of the Board.
  • Lead trustee onboarding and development, track participation and impact, and ensure alignment with University governance best practices.
  • Collaborate with Institutional Advancement to strengthen trustee involvement in philanthropy, community engagement, and strategic positioning.
