Portland, Oregon, United States Stoel Rives Full time

The Stoel Rives Summer Program

Our summer program is designed to immerse you in the practice of law and our culture at Stoel Rives. We offer our summer associates well-rounded opportunities including robust training and development, interesting work assignments, pro bono opportunities, mentorship, relationship building, community engagement, and (of course) fun.

We are seeking a 2L summer associate with an electrical engineering, computer science, or software engineering degree for our patent prosecution group within the TIP practice group. This summer associate can work in our Seattle or Portland office.

Stoel Rives' Technology & Intellectual Property ("TIP") practice is one that includes talented professionals with experience in business, regulatory law, and litigation related to intellectual property rights (patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets). As a summer associate you may have an opportunity to work with attorneys across our core practice groups and industries, such as corporate, real estate, litigation, manufacturing, and transportation.

As a summer associate with our TIP practice group, you will have the opportunity to work on patent applications and patent prosecution actions in technologies ranging from artificial intelligence and other complex software to telecommunications and medical device applications. You may also take projects that include patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses, and legal research for IP litigation and licensing support.

Each of our summer associates is paired with an experienced attorney to provide feedback and guidance on navigating legal practice. Summer associates also participate in social and networking events to meet attorneys from across multiple practice groups.

Requisite Experience and Skills

We are looking for applications from students with a variety of backgrounds, experiences, skills, and interests. Criteria we consider when selecting summer associates include:

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Software Engineering; and
  • Eligibility to sit for the USPTO Bar Exam;
  • Intellectual curiosity, sound judgment, responsiveness, initiative, and perseverance;
  • A commitment to client service and team success;
  • A record of academic achievement, excellent legal analysis and writing skills, interpersonal and leadership skills, and community involvement;
  • An intent to practice law after law school graduation where you are hired as a summer associate.

Compensation

Our summer associates receive the weekly equivalent of an entry-level associate salary in their office location. The weekly salary in the Seattle office is $3,942, and the weekly salary in the Portland office is $3,462.
