General Definition of Work

Under the direction of the Director of Exceptional Student Education, the job of a Compliance Specialist involves performing a variety of tasks, monitoring the successful implementation of district initiatives and programs, developing and updating district compliance procedures for the provision of special education services. The position is to assist with district and state program compliance and instructional leadership to ensure district compliance with state procedures and federal law regarding the referral, identification, IEP development, placement, and services provided to students in Exceptional Student Education.

Essential Functions

  • Audit federal, state and local paperwork
  • Collaboration with administrators, teachers, and District Office staff
  • Implement systems and supports for timely special education reporting.

  • Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive inquiries and complaints regarding compliance issues

  • Oversee the use of the online state and local software management systems for special education and

  • Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes knowledge of instructional technology and the ability to integrate it into all curriculums.

  • Ability to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; routinely gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods.
  • Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment.
  • In working with others, independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.
  • Problem solving with data requires analysis based on curriculum standards and organizational objectives; problem solving with equipment is limited.

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in job related Minimum 5 years' experience in field.

Certificates & Licenses

  • Highly Qualified status and South Carolina certification in appropriate Special Education area required with a strong GPA in relevant coursework

Special Requirements

  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver's License or ability to provide own transportation
  • May be required to travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
  • Prior to beginning employment, negative tb test results must be provided

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Work requires the occasional exertion of up to ten pounds of force
  • Work regularly requires exchange of accurate and detailed information through oral and written communication
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office business equipment
  • Ability to remain in stationary position for required meetings/work

Pre-Onboarding and Employment Requirements
As a condition of employment and prior to onboarding, the district will conduct a criminal history background check. The recommended candidate will be required to provide personal information necessary to complete the background check such as date of birth, gender, and race to remain in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.  As part of the pre-employment process, candidates will be required to submit TB test results and complete designated employment tasks.
