Samaritan Medical Center is seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Surgical Services to provide strategic, clinical, and operational leadership across all perioperative services. This senior nursing leadership role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, efficient, and patient-centered surgical care while advancing organizational goals related to quality, safety, fiscal stewardship, workforce engagement, and regulatory compliance.

The Director of Surgical Services is a registered professional nurse who provides comprehensive oversight of surgical and perioperative departments, working collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesia leadership, nursing leadership, and executive teams to optimize performance, patient outcomes, and staff development.

The Director of Surgical Services implements and operationalizes the philosophy, objectives, standards, and policies of the organization and the Division of Nursing, while maintaining an effective Quality and Performance Improvement program integrated with hospital-wide initiatives. The Director serves as a key partner to surgeons, anesthesia leadership, and executive leadership in optimizing surgical services performance, patient outcomes, staff engagement, and regulatory compliance.

Leadership and Organizational Engagement:

  • Serves as a member of the Nursing Division leadership team and collaborates with nursing and organizational leaders to drive continuous process improvement

  • Participates in divisional committees and councils

  • Promotes a culture of inclusion through shared governance and supports unit-based councils as a primary mechanism for frontline engagement and problem-solving within the surgical services environment

Perioperative Operations:

  • Provides operational and strategic oversight of perioperative services, which may include the Operating Room (OR), Pre-Operative Services, PACU, Sterile Processing/Central Sterile, procedural areas, anesthesia coordination, and surgical scheduling
  • Directs day-to-day operations including staffing models, scheduling, case flow, and block utilization
  • Monitors and improves key metrics such as first-case on-time starts, turnover times, throughput, and staffing efficiency

Regulatory Compliance and Clinical Education:

  • Ensures full compliance with all regulatory and accrediting bodies, including the New York State Department of Health, CMS, and The Joint Commission
  • Oversees and validates staff competencies required by governing bodies
  • Partners closely with Nursing Education to support orientation, competency validation, and ongoing education for existing and new surgical service lines

Workforce Leadership:

  • Provides direct leadership and oversight to three Nurse Managers and the Manager of Central Sterile Processing
  • Recruits, develops, evaluates, and mentors perioperative leaders and staff
  • Partners with Human Resources on employee relations, performance management, and succession planning

Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) required
  • Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field preferred

Licensure/Certification:

  • Current New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license or ability to obtain
  • CNOR or other perioperative certification preferred

Experience:

  • Progressive leadership experience in perioperative or surgical services required
  • Experience in a unionized healthcare environment preferred
