Purpose: Lead Visitor Information staff as they assist visitors in creating their best Maine experience, so they stay longer, explore more, spend more, and come back again, ultimately adding value for visitors, members, and Maine's tourism economy.

Job Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Center Manager,

  • Lead by example and coach Travel Counselors on interactions with visitors.
  • Oversee Travel Counselors in the absence of the Center Manager.
  • Communicate Center needs (supplies, repairs, etc.) with Center Manager and Custodial Supervisor where appropriate.
  • Oversee cash handling including cash reconciliations and deposits.
  • Reconcile Travel Counselor hours with payroll
  • Assist Center Manager with scheduling and other administrative responsibilities.

Assume the responsibilities of a Travel Counselor, including:

  • Greet all visitors in a welcoming and friendly way. Assist visitors however possible.
  • Answer questions in-person, by phone or by email using appropriate literature, internet sources, and other resources provided in the Center for this purpose.
  • Stay up to date with Maine's offerings for visitors and with Maine Tourism Association's member-partners.
  • Perform transactions for IFW, NPS, and Lottery products.
  • Maintain publication inventory systems.
  • Ensure publication display racks and exhibits are fully stocked at all times.
  • Alert custodial staff of any issues or situations requiring their attention.
  • Notify management of any irregular situations or any safety/security concerns. Contact local emergency organizations or 911 as needed and fill out appropriate reports.
  • Perform opening and closing tasks when scheduled.
  • Complete all required training programming.
  • Perform all duties as directed by the Visitor Information Center Manager.

Job Skills:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment as well as maintain productivity in down times.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability. Ability to provide leadership during change.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and skills, and to learn about member-partner offerings and offerings throughout Maine for visitors.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to remain professional and courteous at all times.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate both in oral and written format to a diverse range of audiences.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when required.
  • Proficiency in common software applications (Excel, Word, web browsers, email, social media, etc.) and the ability to learn new applications.
  • Basic map reading and computation skills.
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays as assigned.
  • Ability to lift 35 lbs.
