Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) - Heckscher State Park

The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description This position is a skilled-trades responsible for the mechanic and technician duties within Heckscher State Park. The Service & Repair Mechanic's primary responsibility is to perform journey-level motor equipment repair. Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Diagnoses the cause of breakdowns and for performing major and minor mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs on self-propelled and non-self-propelled mowers, tractors, attachments, vehicles and equipment.
• Works on heavy and light trucks, bulldozers, excavators, compressors, rollers, various mowing equipment, and chain saws and other small-engine equipment.
• Performs routine preventive maintenance and vehicle safety inspections on a routine basis.
• Performs NYS vehicle inspections.
• Supervises and trains lower level or seasonal garage employees to ensure that instructions have been followed, and the quality of work is satisfactory.
• Conducts inspections of facilities/equipment and makes recommendations for repairs or replacements.
• Operates various motor vehicles for towing/hauling and snow plowing/removal as needed
• Performs various welding and metal fabrication duties as needed. Metal fabrication will involve not only motor equipment but also fabrication for various purposes as needed.
• Operates and supervises the machine shop, which houses various specialized equipment for fabrication and metal working.
• Performs other related duties as needed such as repair to small equipment, e.g., mowers, chainsaws, weed trimmers, etc.
• Other related duties as needed.

The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.1. Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.2. Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.

• Selected candidate must possess a New York State Motor Vehicle Operator's License by date of appointment and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.
