Summary Description:

As a strategic leader in fund development, the Director of Philanthropy will leverage the Goodwill brand and social enterprise businesses to raise significant funds in support of Goodwill's mission: creating solutions to poverty through the businesses we operate. An entrepreneur, who engages, develops and stewards high impact relationships, the Head of Philanthropy will work to substantially increase contributed income. A relentless learner, the Director of Philanthropy will unbridle potential relationships and opportunities for Goodwill.

Exemplary Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Reporting Directly to the President/CEO the Director of Philanthropy will align, coordinate and design a fund development strategy to bring Goodwill forward through systems and best practices that are relevant, current and engaging.
  • Collaborating with an energetic and resourceful team, the Director of Philanthropy will modernize Goodwill's development efforts using digital and social media strategies and will successfully manage and grow an active portfolio of Goodwill's existing and prospective donors.
  • Maximizing the opportunity of Goodwill's Annual Awards Dinner, the Director of Philanthropy will build Goodwill's fundraising revenue ROI while increasing program capacity. The Director of Philanthropy will be passionate about raising money for social impact and transformation work.
  • Design and execute a comprehensive strategy to identify, cultivate, steward and solicit corporations, government agencies, foundations, individuals and family foundations in support of Goodwill's mission.
  • Grow major gifts program including identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major donors. Build and maintain relationships and solicitation strategies with portfolio of existing and prospective major donors engaging key staff as appropriate. Coordinate donor meetings for the President/CEO, who is also a primary contact for major donors
  • Collaborate and work very closely with the President/CEO, Vice President of Workforce Development, Board, leadership team members, and community leaders to plan strategies for fundraising campaigns.
  • Ensure the production and fulfillment of annual direct mail and online appeals to encompass list segmentation, design, printing, mail production, content up-loads, etc. Engage and provide directions to vendors as necessary.
  • Supervise ongoing data collection, CRM Management (specifically for donor/donation date), prompt gift acknowledgments and accurate reports of existing donors.
  • Manage the school fundraising donation drive program by ensuring that contact lists are updated, outreach efforts are executed, and event coordination is communicated.
  • Plan, coordinate and support Goodwill's Annual Awards Dinner, Eco Couture Fashion Show, and all ongoing development events.
  • Coordinate with President/CEO on all outreach activities related to brand and messaging, website management, e-mail communications, social media and print collateral to support donor engagement and fundraising activities.
  • Regularly evaluate internal fundraising strategies, policies, systems and procedures for efficiency and effectiveness. Ensure compliance with all relevant policies and regulations set forth by the IRS, Board, and President/CEO.
  • Build a culture for philanthropy, internally and externally, that will attract donors to the organization.

Employment Standards:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required. At least 5-7 years of work experience in fundraising, including a track record of success in the major gifts category, and 3 years in management. Experience working in a high energy, complex organization.
  • Proven experience using innovative approaches to create and execute strategic fund development initiatives within the nonprofit industry. Demonstrated success in a variety of state-of-the-art fundraising approaches, and in achieving fundraising goals.
  • Current knowledge of legal and tax issues applicable to a wide variety of fundraising practices. Knowledge of principles, procedures, ethics, regulations, and standards as applied to fundraising.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Positive record in researching, cultivating and soliciting major gifts, including deferred gifts and bequests, from individuals, and in qualifying for grants and sponsorships through government sources, foundations and corporations.
  • Positive record and experience in executing capital campaigns and major fundraising drives.
  • Financial acumen to create, track and report on annual department budget, and to accurately monitor, report and evaluate restricted and unrestricted gifts and grant monies.
  • Highly skilled at relating effectively and developing positive relationships with a broad range of organizational stakeholders including CEO, leadership staff, Boards, community leaders, etc.; skill in working harmoniously with many personalities and comfort with start-up cultures and leadership.
  • Highly effective written and oral communications that develop and articulate compelling case statements, grant proposals, and other key fund-raising communications for a variety of audiences and social media outlets.
  • Goal-driven and self-starter in initiating donor visits and making fundraising calls.
  • Strong ability to make public appearances and share information and excitement about the Mission of Goodwill in the communities we serve. Gladly accepts, and actively seeks, speaking engagements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required. Knowledge of other fundraising software and database management systems is a plus. Ability to effectively utilize databases for donor research and tracking.
  • Savvy use of current and cutting-edge technology and social media as a tool for fundraising.
  • Demonstrated skill in respectful and sensitive communication with diverse cultures, language groups, abilities, lifestyles, and backgrounds. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the populations Goodwill serves.
  • Unquestioned integrity, professional demeanor and authenticity in building relationships with, and inspiring best effort from staff, donors and partners.
  • Displays a positive attitude; shows concern for people and community, demonstrates a professional presence, is self-confident, and displays common sense and ability to listen.
  • Willingness to travel. Able to work nights and weekends as needed.

License/Certification:

  • The Director of Philanthropy must possess a valid California motor vehicle operator's license, current automobile insurance and be willing to use his/her personal vehicle in the course of employment.
