Veterinary Assistant / Kennel Assistant
PAY: $15 – $16 per hour

At South Sioux Animal Hospital, we strive to provide the highest standards of care for every patient. We have digital x-ray, ultrasound, full in-house lab equipment, and computerized medical records. We are a 3-doctor practice supported by a skilled team of veterinary technicians and assistants. We have proudly served pets in the Siouxland area for over 50 years.

This is a full-time position, typically 34–40 hours per week, with rotating holiday and occasional after-hours on-call responsibility.

Job Responsibilities

Veterinary Assistant / Kennel Assistants care for animals under the supervision of a veterinarian or veterinary technician. Responsibilities include daily care of boarding animals, supporting animals recovering from treatment, and providing compassionate, gentle handling at all times.

Education, Training & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Prior experience safely handling and restraining cats and dogs preferred
  • On-the-job training provided; previous animal-care experience is advantageous
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance and perform repetitive physical tasks

Key Duties

  • Provide routine pet care and general nursing support
  • Feed animals and monitor food/water intake
  • Exercise boarding pets
  • Assist veterinarians and technicians with lab work and treatments
  • Prepare animals and instruments for surgery when needed
  • Assist during procedures and monitor animals under anesthesia
  • Follow cleaning, sterilization, and isolation procedures
  • Clean and maintain kennels; wash bedding and bowls
  • Comfort and restrain pets during exams
  • Check vitals and gather medical history for appointments
  • Greet clients and assist at reception when needed
  • Maintain accurate kennel records
  • Manage inventory of office and cleaning supplies
  • Work occasional weekends, holidays, and after-hours on-call shifts
