SUMMARY

The Department of Public Works builds the foundation for a thriving city by providing essential services that enhance the community's quality of life. Engineering, being a division of Public Works, oversees the development, design, construction management, and inspection for a wide range of public works and capital improvement projects throughout the City.

Engineering Interns will work in a collaborative environment with the City of South Bend Engineering team on tasks including planning, design, asset management, data analysis, fieldwork, and engineering inspection for various Public Works projects. The program provides participants with the opportunity to collaborate in small teams, addressing complex community challenges by applying technical expertise, analytical reasoning, and empathetic problem-solving approaches.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Engineering Interns will work on a short list of main projects over the summer with a team of 2 other interns, mentored by City staff. In addition to the main project, other daily tasks may be assigned, including but not limited to:

  • Perform GIS data collection to further inventory and manage the Department of Public Works assets.

  • Perform field inspections of existing street conditions, signage, sewer and water utilities, curb and sidewalk condition, stormwater infrastructure, etc.

  • Compile research related to engineering planning, design projects, industry standards, and guidance documents.

  • Assist with the development of plans and specifications related to capital improvement projects.

  • Perform construction observation and inspection.

  • Research state and local regulations.

  • Gain experience toward a career as a professional engineer.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student in good standing working toward a degree in Engineering, preferably Civil, Environmental, or similar program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED

  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and check the quality of own work.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

  • Ability to use sound judgment.

  • Ability to manage time and workload effectively which includes planning, organizing, and prioritizing with attention to details in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate on and off a project meeting or construction site.

Work environment is both formal and informal, team oriented, having variable tasks, pace, and pressure.
