GENERAL SUMMARY: The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for handling routine maintenance and repairs on plant facilities and equipment. The Maintenance Mechanic performs tasks in accordance with the Plant Maintenance Program and associated maintenance and repair procedures.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
Participate in the plant's preventive maintenance program by performing routine maintenance duties, including the collection of trending information for the Maintenance Manager.
Keep track of spare parts as they are used and complete a usage report to replace items as necessary. Assist in physical inventories.
Participate in the administrative maintenance of the plant operating manuals, technical references, prints and diagrams and preventive/predictive maintenance records.
Set up and operate machine shop tools in the performance of all machine work to close tolerances. Align and balance rotating equipment.
Inspect and repair all turbines, heat exchangers, pumps, fans, and similar equipment.
Assemble and repair tubing, piping, valves, and fittings subjected to both high and low temperature or high and low pressure, or where certified welding is required.
Assemble, disassemble, repair, and adjust all types of electrical and mechanical equipment.
Must be able to work in dirty environments such as coal and ash.
Complete other tasks as requested by the Maintenance Manager.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
The Maintenance Mechanic operates from established and well-known procedures under minimum supervision, performing duties independently with only general direction given. Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines. The Maintenance Mechanic encounters recurring work situations of high complexity, with occasional variations from the norm.
The Maintenance Mechanic must perform work in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, and in compliance with all environmental permits. The Maintenance Mechanic must effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow plant employees, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance; and provide suggestions for plant improvements. The Maintenance Mechanic must perform duties in such a way to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical requirements include working on feet for 12-hour periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (example: hard hats, safety glasses, respiratory protection, which requires employee to pass medical clearance to wear a respirator and employee must always remain clean shaven in the respirator seal area to meet OSHA requirements, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.
Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school.
Four years' experience as a power plant mechanic, millwright or equivalent required.
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
Must successfully complete a Maintenance Mechanics test.
