Overview:

The Data Modeler is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining logical and physical data models that support business intelligence, analytics, and operational applications. This role ensures data structures are optimized for scalability, performance, and data integrity across enterprise systems. The Data Modeler collaborates closely with data architects, database administrators, business analysts, and software developers to translate business requirements into efficient database designs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models for enterprise data warehouses, data marts, and transactional systems.
  • Collaborate with business analysts and data architects to understand data requirements and translate them into efficient data models.
  • Develop and enforce data modeling standards, naming conventions, and metadata management best practices.
  • Create ER diagrams and maintain documentation of data entities, relationships, and attributes using tools such as ER/Studio, Erwin Data Modeler, Lucidchart, or PowerDesigner.
  • Work with SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Azure SQL, or Snowflake databases to implement and maintain optimized schemas and structures.
  • Design and tune database schemas, indexes, and partitioning strategies to support performance and scalability requirements.
  • Collaborate with ETL developers and data engineers to ensure data integration pipelines align with the data model and data quality standards.
  • Support data governance initiatives by ensuring consistency, quality, and accuracy of enterprise data.
  • Participate in data profiling, data lineage analysis, and impact assessments to maintain system integrity and compliance.
  • Work with reporting and BI teams (SSRS, Power BI, Tableau) to ensure analytical models align with data warehouse structures.
  • Provide technical support for database design, query optimization, and data migration initiatives.
  • Ensure all data models comply with security, compliance, and privacy standards (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR, SOX).

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, or related field.
  • 3–7 years of experience in data modeling, database design, or data architecture.
  • Strong proficiency with data modeling tools such as Erwin Data Modeler, ER/Studio, or PowerDesigner.
  • Advanced SQL knowledge and hands-on experience with RDBMS platforms (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Azure SQL, Snowflake).
  • Experience with ETL tools such as SSIS, Informatica, Azure Data Factory, or Talend.
  • Familiarity with data warehousing concepts, dimensional modeling (Star Schema, Snowflake Schema), and OLAP/OLTP systems.
  • Understanding of data governance, metadata management, and master data management (MDM) principles.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms such as Azure Synapse, AWS Redshift, or Google BigQuery is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with NoSQL data modeling (MongoDB, Cassandra).
  • Exposure to data lake architectures (Azure Data Lake, AWS S3).
  • Knowledge of data cataloging tools (e.g., Collibra, Alation).
  • Certification in data modeling, database administration, or cloud data engineering (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate).
