Quantum Device Measurement Scientist
We are seeking a motivated and organized Quantum Device Measurement Scientist to join a newly formed research effort, Universal Control of Scaled Spin Systems (UCS3). This unique effort will combine the fast-paced and agile approach of an academic research environment with the abilities and scale of industrial technology development, with an emphasis on publishing achievements. The team's technical objective is to transition "Loss-DiVincenzo" single spin qubits from academic scale few-qubit devices to industrial-scale quantum information processors. Research will initially take place on HRL's Malibu campus and is expected to transition to UCLA's Quantum Innovation Hub in two to three years.
Essential Duties:
Operate a dilution refrigerator for the purpose of conducting low-noise, cryogenic experiments on microwave-controlled single spin qubit devices.
Develop the measurement techniques and quantum control methods required to operate Loss-DiVincenzo single spin qubits, including the generation of script level code to support experimental development and data analysis.
Develop and maintain software to support experimental development and data analysis, including software to control signal generation and measurement hardware.
Develop algorithmic software techniques to automate device tuning and calibration.
Analyze results, document and report findings in oral presentations, written reports, and publications.
Analyze measurement results through the application of relevant theory and modeling to define approaches for further device improvements in performance and/or yield.
Effectively collaborate with other members of the team to identify and implement improvements to experimental infrastructure, control hardware/software, and device designs.
Interface effectively with staff at academic partner institutions.
Required Skills:
Detailed knowledge of modern experimental physics techniques including troubleshooting analog electronics and noise analysis, familiarity with scientific programming for data analysis and hardware interfacing (specific language is not critical), experience in scientific communication through technical presentations and journal publications. Proficiency with Python, experience with software engineering practices such as version control and continuous integration, and experience with machine learning will be viewed favorably.
Required Education:
Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, or Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on quantum devices or technologies.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to climb ladders to use elevated test equipment.
Must be able to work safely in a laboratory environment and be on-site at least four days per week.
Must be able to work at a computer for extended periods.
Special Requirements:
US citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain US Government security clearance
Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $140,700 - $175,900 + bonus + benefits.
Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range during the hiring process. Please note that the compensation details listed reflect the base salary only, and do not include potential bonus or benefits.
We are proud to be an EEO/AA employer M/F/D/V. We maintain a drug-free workplace and perform pre-employment substance abuse testing.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
