Summary:
The Police Corporal is a sworn, commissioned University Special Police Officer, serving as an operational supervisor in the American University Police Department (AUPD). At the discretion of command staff, they serve as the Watch Commander in the absence of the Police Sergeant, providing campus-wide supervision to Police Operations personnel and operational command of all emergencies, special events, serious incidents, and non-emergency calls for service. They respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents, writes reports, and conducts investigations. The Police Corporal reviews daily incident reports and notifies appropriate command staff and university personnel of emergency situations. The Police Corporal reports directly to the Police Sergeant or other commanding officer and will be assigned to the Police Operations Unit. Position is considered as essential personnel under the University Personnel policies. Position is required to be able to work outside normal business hours to include nights and weekends.
Essential Functions:
1.) Police Operational Coordination
Coordinates AUPD functions, including patrol, incident response, initial investigations, crime scene response, traffic and parking code enforcement, and event security oversight, at the discretion of command staff. Assumes incident command and coordinates the AUPD police response to emergency/critical incidents. Actively participates on patrol. Review and edit daily incident reports. Ensures compliance with all applicable University and District of Columbia policies, regulations and laws.
2.) Program Coordination
Coordinates assigned AUPD programs, including but not limited to, police patrol operations, investigations, property and evidence, training, crime prevention, victim assistance, special events, records management, and/or other programs as assigned. Ensures program compliance with University policy and District of Columbia law. Collaborates with the Clery Act Coordinator to ensure program compliance with the Clery Act, Title IX and the Higher Education Opportunity Act.
3.) Personnel Supervision
Serves as the Watch Commander in the absence of the Police Sergeant as assigned by command staff. Provides functional supervision to all personnel on the assigned shift. Notifies the Police Sergeant of any performance or conduct matters. Verifies compliance with American University policy and all District of Columbia regulations for University Special Police Officers.
4.) Police Training
Trains new and continuing Police Officers, as assigned by command staff, on law enforcement topics, such as search & seizure, use of force, report writing and incident response. Completes and submits training records to the appropriate supervisor.
5.) Police Liaison
Maintains partnerships with University and community departments and agencies, such as Campus Life, Housing & Dining, Facilities Management, Metropolitan Police Department, DC Fire Department and Homeland Security. Coordinates incident response with those entities. Assists other DPS units with physical security planning, crime prevention projects and emergency preparedness programs.

40 hours per week.
The Police Officer is assigned to one of three shifts (daylight, evening, or midnight).
The incumbent is designated as an "Essential" employee under American University policy so you will be required to work regardless of weather or natural/man-made disaster and is subject to call-out. AUPD works with Housing and Residence Life to make every effort to provide rooms to our essential employees, so AUPD staff do not have to travel back and forth during emergencies. The cost of the rooms is covered by AUPD.
Salary Range:
$ $33.15 per hour.
Required Education and Experience:
Associate's degree or equivalent.
1 - 3 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
2 - 4 years of relevant experience.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
Prior experience as a sworn, uniformed officer and/or supervisor in a law enforcement agency.
Prior experience in a policing environment.
Comprehensive knowledge of community policing techniques (obtained via experience, education, and training), especially as it pertains to the university environment.
Knowledge of criminal law and procedure of the District of Columbia.
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population.
Must have demonstrated experience following and implementing policies and procedures.
Must be able to quickly evaluate critical situations and determine the appropriate response, as demonstrated through past law enforcement experience.
Demonstrated experience in the utilization of modern law enforcement supervisory strategies, operational and investigative techniques, and technological tools.
Must be able to possess and maintain a University Special Police Officer Commission or equivalent.
Successful completion of medical and psychiatric examinations.
Successful completion of initial, annual and random drug screens.
Must possess and maintain a current driver's license and successfully obtain the University's approval to drive University vehicles.
Must be able to maintain and possess certification from a recognized law enforcement-training academy or the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area Campus Public Safety Institute.
Must be able to maintain and possess all certifications that are required for uniformed officers.
Must have comprehensive knowledge of the laws of arrest, search, and seizure.
