The Assistant/Associate Professor of Mathematics is expected to contribute meaningfully to the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics by delivering high-quality instruction and fostering a positive learning environment. The faculty member will uphold the Christian values espoused by Dallas Baptist University and must be an active member of a local Baptist church. The individual is also expected to integrate faith into the subject matter, participate actively in department and college meetings, and collaborate with colleagues for curriculum development and improvement. The overarching objective is to prepare students comprehensively in the field of Mathematics while nurturing their spiritual growth, thereby achieving a holistic education.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An earned Doctorate in Mathematics is preferred.
  • Exceptionally qualified candidates with a Master's degree in Mathematics who have completed doctoral-level coursework and possess significant undergraduate teaching experience will be considered.

BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Faculty members are expected to be loyal to Dallas Baptist University and professional in the discharge of their duties. Although not all-encompassing, the following designates basic responsibilities which faculty members should perform:

  • Professional Conduct and Loyalty: A faculty member will fulfill the responsibilities and duties for which he/she is employed, in accordance with his/her contract. During the term of the contract, a full-time faculty member at Dallas Baptist University will not be permitted to teach or serve on the faculty of another academic institution or hold an additional permanent position away from the University.

  • Christian Conduct: Faculty members are expected to reflect conduct that is Christian. High standards of professional conduct are expected in their relationships with colleagues, administrative officials, Board of Trustees, students, and the public in general.

  • Spiritual Mentoring: It is one of the basic responsibilities of every DBU faculty member to spiritually mentor and care for students. Every faculty member should see their role as a ministry to the student, challenging and encouraging them in their Christian walk.

  • Faith Integration: Faculty members are required to carefully and thoughtfully integrate the Christian faith into their subject matters. While this integration may look different in various disciplines, at the core of a DBU education is the belief that the message of the Gospel impacts and influences all aspects of life. As such, faculty members should model this conviction in their teaching. Each class period taught by the faculty member should provide a meaningful Christian setting for the spiritual growth of both students and the instructor.

  • Excellence in Teaching: Dallas Baptist University places the highest priority on excellence in teaching in the classroom. Modeling for students a high regard for scholarship, the faculty member should evidence expertise in the discipline and in a variety of methods of instruction.

  • Teaching Priority over Research: Dallas Baptist University is a teaching university, and while research and publication are encouraged, they should not be prioritized over the care, teaching, and learning of students.

  • Alignment with University Mission: Instructional techniques and policies employed by faculty members will be in accord with the purpose of DBU, as reflected in its mission statement, and will be appropriate to the specific goals of the classes.

  • Professional Relationships: Faculty members should exercise mature judgment in personal relationships with students. Faculty members should not be romantically involved with current DBU students.

  • Collegiality: Faculty members are required to maintain a collegial relationship with other faculty members, as well as members of the DBU administration and staff.

BASIC DUTIES:

  • Teaching Load: Faculty members are required to teach a 12-15 hour course load each long semester and additional courses during Summer and Winter terms, totaling 30 credit hours during the academic year, in accordance with their 12-month contract.

  • Class Meetings: Faculty members are required to meet classes at appointed times and for specified contact hours in assigned classrooms.

  • Office Hours: To provide students access to faculty, each full-time faculty member should maintain at least ten (10) regularly scheduled office hours each week. During special times such as academic advising and registration, additional hours should be planned as needed to meet student needs. If a student cannot make an appointment during posted hours, the faculty member should arrange a conference at a mutually accepted time.

  • Advising and Mentoring: Effective advising and mentoring of students by faculty contribute significantly to student retention and program completion. Faculty members will be assigned advisees by the Dean, as appropriate, to provide effective guidance for the students. Faculty are also required to assist with advising during new student orientation and registration periods each year to support incoming students.

  • Absence Protocol: No faculty member shall be absent from class or any other school responsibility without first conferring with the Dean of the College/School or Program or his/her designee.

  • Emergency Notifications: A faculty member will notify the chairperson of their department or the Dean as soon as possible if an emergency prevents a scheduled class from being met. If a professional meeting is the reason for a faculty member's absence, acceptable approved arrangements for the class must be made.

  • Reporting Responsibilities: Faculty will follow stated procedures and meet identified deadlines when carrying out requested reporting responsibilities such as grade reporting, Annual Reports, periodic student progress reports, attendance verification, accreditation reports, and other reports as designated by the President, Provost, and the dean of the college.

  • Collaboration with Administration: Faculty members are to work with their deans and department chairs in all matters related to their teaching assignments and other duties.

  • Commencement Participation: Full-time faculty members are expected to support all commencement services. Participants are expected to appear in appropriate academic regalia and march in the procession.

  • Committee Service: Responsible service on committees is an important role of the faculty member. Faculty members are expected to serve on various university and college-appointed committees, with assignments coordinated by the Faculty Council or departmental leadership.

  • Professional Development: Each faculty member will participate annually in various forms of professional development sponsored by the University, as well as engage individually as a scholar and member of learned societies.

  • Use of University Email: All full-time and part-time faculty must use their DBU-issued email accounts. Personal email accounts should not be used to conduct university business under any circumstances.

  • Faculty Council Meetings: Faculty will attend all meetings of the Faculty Council. Any necessary absences should be approved by the Dean of the college.

  • Other Duties: Faculty members will coordinate with the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and/or Mathematics Department Chair to fulfill other College/Departmental duties as assigned.

WORK SCHEDULE:

This is a 12-month full-time teaching position with classes meeting during the regular workday (8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday), or weekday evenings if needed. As part of their duties, full-time professors are required to maintain at least ten (10) regularly scheduled office hours each week.

WORK LOCATION:

This position will work on the main campus, located at 3000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211.

Requirements:

  • Must be a Christian who is a member of a church that holds Jesus Christ to be their Lord and Savior, and who holds solely the Old Testament and the New Testament as sacred Scriptures.
  • Must be an active member of a local Baptist church.
