Job Opening: Acting Music Director at Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church (EUUC) in Canoga Park, CA
Job Title: Acting Music Director
Supervision: Supervised by the Minister
Hours: 5-8 hours per week with some flexibility in preparation from home, varying hours to accommodate working with others, and regular hours on Sunday mornings for the services.
Salary: $33/hour
Benefits: We offer sick leave, accumulated per hour worked. We also offer paid holidays if they fall during regularly scheduled hours. This position is not eligible for other benefits. The schedule for this position is flexible and may be ideal for someone with another job or home/family responsibilities.
About EUUC: Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church is a liberal, religious community in the Canoga Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. We were founded in 1954. We have been on the forefront of social justice and spiritual issues since our founding. We have around 100 members and seek to be a place of welcome and comfort for all who seek a progressive community. We meet for worship services at 10:30 AM on Sundays and host various other activities and groups throughout the week.
Job Requirements: This position has overall accountability for the music program, except for the choir, and is responsible for creating, cultivating, and directing an inspiring music program that supports the EUUC Mission and Vision. The opportunity may move from the Acting Music Director position to a permanent position after a six-month program evaluation period.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Collaborating with the minister/worship leaders to integrate music in Sunday worship services.
- Coordinating closely with the Choir Director and choir, rehearsing with the choir, and providing practice tracks as needed.
- Selecting appropriate hymns and other songs/music in consultation with the minister/worship leaders for Sunday services.
- Providing piano/musical accompaniment for Sunday services, including planning for Associate Pianist/alternate musicians when unavailable.
- Supporting and developing vibrant congregational music-making through song leading and teaching of new music.
- Arranging for guest musicians as appropriate with an emphasis on diversity on musical styles.
- Organizing and directing other musicians (this includes working with a band and other lay talent).
Required/Preferred Skill Set:
- At least one degree in Music.
- Church experience preferred.
- Organized and able to keep track of and follow up on several tasks at the same time.
- Communicates clearly in both writing and speech.
- Understands or is willing to become familiar with Unitarian Universalist values, organization, and culture in order to support Emerson's operations.
- Works well with people.
