This dual-role position offers firefighter training and certification after hire, making it ideal for paramedics looking to expand their career into fire services, if they don't already have these certifications. Pay increases come with fire certifications. A candidate with fire certifications prior to applying is highly encouraged but not mandatory.

As a Paramedic/Firefighter, you'll deliver Advanced LIfe Support (ALS) in high-pressure situations, respond to fires and other emergencies, participate in prevention efforts, and contribute to a professional, supportive team environment. Our department places a strong emphasis on safety, mental wellness, training and career development.

Minimum Qualifications

Education-High School Diploma or GED required

Licenses & Certifications (required at time of Hire)

  • Utah Paramedic Certification or National (NREMT) Paramedic Certification *must obtain Utah Paramedic Certification prior to first shift
  • Valid Utah Drivers License
  • Pediatric Education: EPC, PEPP, PALS OR HANDTEVY
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Basic Life Support (CPR)-AHA provider

Licenses & Certifications (required within 1 year of Hire if not already possessed)

  • Utah State Firefighter I & II (IFSAC or ProBoard)
  • Utah Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations
  • NWCG Wildland Firefighter Certification
  • NWCG S-270 and S-290 Courses

Preferred Qualifications (not required)

  • ACLS Instructor
  • EPC, PEPP, PALS OR Handtevy Instructor
  • BLS CPR Instructor, Training Officer, or Course Coordinator
  • Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science, EMS or related field
  • Utah EMS Instructor, Training Officer, or Course Coordinator
  • PHTLS and AMLS Certifications

Hiring Process Requirements-Applicants must successfully complete:

  • New Hire paperwork including proof of certifications
  • Physical exam and drug screening

Key Responsibilities

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Fire Suppression

  • Provide ALS in accordance with Utah EMS protocols
  • Administer advanced airway management, IV/IO access, EKG monitoring, defibrillation, cardiac pacing, and medication delivery
  • Perform procedures such as cricothyrotomy, thoracic decompression and gastric suction as required
  • Document patient care accurately; maintain all state-required certifications and Continuing Medical Education (CME) hours
  • Respond to structural, vehicle, wildland and chemical fires
  • Operate hoses, ladders, ventilation tools, and suppression equipment
  • Conduct search and rescue operations
  • Participate in salvage, overhaul and scene preservation

Fire Prevention & Public Safety

  • Conduct fire safety inspections and code enforcement
  • Assist with community education events and station tours
  • Identify hazards and participate in incident pre-planning

Training and Development

  • Attend department training on fire, EMS, HazMat, rescue and department guidelines
  • Assist with internal training, drills and onboarding of new personnel
  • Stay current with medical and firefighting protocols and guidelines

Station & Equipment Maintenance

  • Maintain and inspect vehicles, tools, PPE and medical equipment
  • Perform station upkeep and inventories
  • Ensure readiness of all assigned apparatus

Administrative & Leadership Support

  • Maintain accurate reports and documentation
  • Participate in department meetings and planning

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Must be available for 48/96 shift work, overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs
